Abstract: Low molecular weight polymer or copolymers of at least 50 weight per cent of a vinyl ester of a carboxylic acid are prepared by partially or completely polymerizing up to 50% of the monomer or monomer mixture dissolved in 1 to 50% by weight of the total monomer and solvent, of one or more saturated aliphatic monohydric secondary alcohols having 3 to 8 carbon atoms in the presence of a free radical polymerization catalyst and then gradually adding the rest of the monomer or monomer mixture to the batch as the polymerization proceeds. Specified vinyl esters are vinyl esters of C1-18 aliphatic acids, benzoic acid and alkylated benzoic acids. Specified comonomers are alkyl maleates and fumarates and crotonic acid. Specified catalysts are diacyl peroxides, azo compounds and redox systems. Examples describe the polymerization of (1) vinyl acetate in the presence of isopropanol and azodiisobutyronitrile; (2) vinyl acetate in the presence of isopropanol, water and azodiisobutyronitrile; (3) vinyl acetate and dibutyl maleate in the presence of isopropanol, water and azodiisobutyronitrile; (4) vinyl acetate, dibutyl maleate and crotonic acid in the presence of isopropanol and azodiisobutyronitrile; (5) vinyl benzoate in the presence of isopropanol and diacetyl peroxide; and (6) vinyl benzoate and dibutyl fumarate in the presence of isopropanol and dibenzoyl peroxide, in each case with the subsequent addition of monomer and catalyst. The polymers may be used in the manufacture of chewing gums.
