Abstract: 1,144,152. Polymerization of vinyl esters. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 26 May, 1966 [26 May, 1965], No. 23572/66. Heading C3P. Aqueous dispersions of vinyl ester polymers are produced by polymerizing at least one vinyl ester of a monocarboxylic acid with 2 to 19 carbon atoms, alone or in the presence of up to 35% by weight of at least one other mono-olefinically unsaturated monomer, in an aqueous phase, suitably at 40‹ to 95‹ C., using a watersoluble free radical polymerization catalyst in the presence of, as protective colloid, a reaction product of polyvinyl alcohol and 0À1 to 10% by weight of at least one mono-olefinically unsaturated aldehyde containing 3 to 8 carbon atoms, the final dispersion containing 0À5-15% of colloid. The polyvinyl alcohols are saponification products of vinyl ester homopolymers, or copolymers or graft polymers, many of which polymers are specified. Specified aldehydes are but - 3 - en - 1 - al, pent - 2 - en - 1 - al, tiglic aldehyde, hex-2-en-1-al, acrolein, α-ethyl-, α- methyl-, #-ethyl-, and α-propylacrolein, and crotonic aldehyde. Specified comonomers are acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, maleic acid, fumaric acid, and esters of these acids with aliphatic monohydric saturated alcohols containing 1 to 10 carbon atoms, and also acrylamide, methacrylamide, crotonic acid, and vinyl chloride. The modified polyvinyl alcohol may be obtained by subjecting the vinyl ester polymers, in methanol and in the presence of alkaline or acid catalysts, to an alcoholysis, and reacting the polyvinyl alcohol obtained, in the presence of acid catalysts and at an elevated temperature, with the unsaturated aldehyde(s). Additional emulsifiers and protective colloids may also be present, e.g. an N-vinyl-N-methylacetamide - 2 - ethylhexyl - acrylate copolymer. Vinyl ester polymers produced in the examples are those of (1), (2) vinyl acetate, (3) vinyl propionate, and (4) vinyl acetate, vinyl ester of branched aliphatic monocarboxylic acids having 9 to 19 carbon atoms, and acrylamide. In comparative examples, unmodified polyvinyl alcohols are used (1A, 2B, 3B), and polyvinyl alcohols modified with saturated aldehydes (1G, 1H-butyraldehyde, 4B - acetaldehyde). The dispersions may be used as adhesives.

Abstract: Compounds having the formula in which R1 is hydrogen or CH3 and R2 is chlorine, C6H5, OOC.R3 or COOR4, R3 being hydrogen or a monovalent saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radical containing 1-18 carbon atoms and R4 being a monovalent saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radical containing 1-8 carbon atoms are polymerized by a free radical method in aqueous phase in the presence of a polymer or copolymer of an open chain N-vinyl-amide of formula in which R5 and R6 each represent hydrogen or a hydrocarbon radical containing 1-20 carbon atoms. The amount of polyvinyl amide dispersing agent may vary from 0.1 to 50% by weight of the water used and the polymeric products obtained are thus either polymer dispersions or graft copolymers. Exemplified monomers polymerized are vinyl acetate, vinyl acetate with dibutyl maleate, styrene, methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate, ethyl hexyl acrylate and ethyl hexyl acrylate with vinyl chloride in the presence of di-n-hexyl-azelate plasticizer. Other conventional surface-active agents and catalysts are exemplified.

Abstract: Low molecular weight polymer or copolymers of at least 50 weight per cent of a vinyl ester of a carboxylic acid are prepared by partially or completely polymerizing up to 50% of the monomer or monomer mixture dissolved in 1 to 50% by weight of the total monomer and solvent, of one or more saturated aliphatic monohydric secondary alcohols having 3 to 8 carbon atoms in the presence of a free radical polymerization catalyst and then gradually adding the rest of the monomer or monomer mixture to the batch as the polymerization proceeds. Specified vinyl esters are vinyl esters of C1-18 aliphatic acids, benzoic acid and alkylated benzoic acids. Specified comonomers are alkyl maleates and fumarates and crotonic acid. Specified catalysts are diacyl peroxides, azo compounds and redox systems. Examples describe the polymerization of (1) vinyl acetate in the presence of isopropanol and azodiisobutyronitrile; (2) vinyl acetate in the presence of isopropanol, water and azodiisobutyronitrile; (3) vinyl acetate and dibutyl maleate in the presence of isopropanol, water and azodiisobutyronitrile; (4) vinyl acetate, dibutyl maleate and crotonic acid in the presence of isopropanol and azodiisobutyronitrile; (5) vinyl benzoate in the presence of isopropanol and diacetyl peroxide; and (6) vinyl benzoate and dibutyl fumarate in the presence of isopropanol and dibenzoyl peroxide, in each case with the subsequent addition of monomer and catalyst. The polymers may be used in the manufacture of chewing gums.

Abstract: Polyvinyl alcohol is prepared by hydrolysing or alcoholysing a polymer of a vinyl ester of a monocarboxylic acid in the presence of an acid catalyst and a dialdehyde, the aldehyde groups of which are separated by at least one carbon atom. Specified polyvinyl esters are polyvinyl formate, acetate, propionate, butyrate and stearate. Specified aldehydes are terephthalic aldehyde, cyclohexane dial-1,4, propane dial, butane dial, pentane dial, hexane dial, phthalic aldehyde, isophthalic aldehyde and diphenyl dial-4,41. Alcoholysis may be effected in the presence of a C1-4 alkanol, e.g. methanol. Specified acid catalysts are perchloric, sulphuric, hydrochloric and sulpho acids. Partial conversions may be effected by using a limited quantity of water or catalyst, regulating the reaction temperature, or neutralizing the catalyst. In examples, polyvinyl acetate is alcoholysed (1) in methanol in the presence of sulphuric acid and cyclohexane dial-1,4 and (2 and 3) in aqueous methanol in the presence of perchloric acid and terephthalic aldehyde.
