    Abstract: Aqueous dispersions of a polyvinyl ester or of a vinyl ester copolymer are prepared by polymerizing at least one vinyl ester, particularly vinyl acetate, in an aqueous emulsion containing, calculated on the weight of the resulting dispersion, 0,1 to 15% of a water-soluble cellulose derivative, 0,01 to 10% of an alkali metal salt of a hydroxydiphenyl, 0,01 to 10% of an alkali metal salt of an inorganic and/or organic acid and 0,001 to 10% of a semi-ester of a dicarboxylic acid with a polyalkylene glycol or polyalkylene glycol derivative as such or in the form of an alkali metal salt of such semi-ester. The water-soluble cellulose derivative may be hydroxyethylated cellulose, the hydroxydiphenyl is preferably 2-hydroxy-diphenyl, and the alkali metal salt may be derived from phosphoric, boric, acetic, citric or adipic acid. The polyethylene glycol derivative may be a partially etherified or esterified polyethylene glycol, a nitrogen-containing polyethylene glycol, a partially-etherified nitrogen-containing polyethylene glycol, an hydroxyethylated polypropylene oxide or a partially etherified or esterified hydroxyethylated polypropylene glycol. The reaction mixture may also contain potassium persulphate as catalyst. Specification 466,173 is referred to.

The binder may also comprise conventional water-soluble binders such as casein, starch and polyvinyl alcohol. The pigment may be china clay, calcium carbonate, barium sulphate, titanium dioxide or satin white. The pigment dispersing agent may be a polyacrylic acid salt or polyphosphate. Examples describe the preparation of paper coating compositions comprising china clay; sodium salt of polyacrylic acid; -ethylene/vinyl acetate, ethylene/vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate or ethylene/vinyl pivalate/vinyl acetate copolymer dispersion; starch, casein or polyvinyl alcohol; and graft polymers of vinyl acetate or vinyl acetate and acrylic acid on polyethylene glycols.

Preferred copolymer salts have the formula in which m is the maleic acid salt fraction in the copolymer, of at most 55 mol. per cent, Me stands for an alkali metal or ammonium ion and n is a whole number within a range of which the lower limit is 3 and of which the upper limit is defined by the solubility of the polymer in water. In the examples the agents contain the sodium salt of a vinyl alcohol/maleic acid copolymer, an alkylaryl sulphonate, non-ionic polyoxypropylene glycol, sodium silicate, magnesium silicate, soap, sodium perborate and carboxymethyl cellulose.
