    Abstract: One or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers are copolymerised in the presence of a free radical-forming catalyst in aqueous dispersion with a monomer having emulsifying action, namely, the reaction products of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid with a polyalkylene oxide, an oxethylated phenol, an oxethylated alcohol or an oxethylated amine. The first monomer may be vinyl esters of saturated aliphatic or aromatic carboxylic acids, e.g. acetate or benzoate, or esters of e.g. acrylic or methacrylic acids with C1-8 monohydric aliphatic alcohols, vinyl or vinylidene chloride or styrene and may be used in admixture with ethylene, C1-8 alkyl maleates or fumarates, vinyl ethers or the above vinyl esters. The catalyst may be hydrogen peroxide, potassium or sodium persulphate, ammonium persulphate or perborate alone or as a redox system. The emulsifier monomer may be e.g. 0.01-15%, of a product derived from acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic, maleic, fumaric or itaconic acids, e.g. H2C=CH.COO.(CH2)2 [OCH2CH2]n OCH2CH2OR where n is 1-100 and R is H, an alkyl with up to 18C, an aryl or cycloalkyl radical, where n1 and n2 are 30-80 and n3 is 30-50, where n and R are as before,

    Abstract: Water-soluble polymers comprise copolymers of (I) a mixed ester of formula or wherein n is zero or an integer within the range of 1 to 50, R represents a straight-chained or branched alkyl radical with 1 to 18 carbon atoms, a cyclohexyl radical, a phenylalkyl radical, the alkyl group of which contains 1 to 18 carbon atoms, a phenyl radical or an alkylphenyl radical, the alkyl group of which contains 1 to 18 carbon atoms, R1 and R11 each represent a hydrogen atom or a methyl radical, whereby R1 and R11 may be the same or different, and R111 represents an alkyl radical with 1 to 6 carbon atoms, a phenyl radical or a hydrogen atom, with (II) at least one ethylenically unsaturated water-soluble polymerizable compound. Component (II) may be acrylamide, methacrylamide, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, sulphonated styrene and vinyl pyrrolidone. Other monomers such as vinyl acetate and acrylonitrile may be present. Polymerization may take place by solution in water, by precipitation in low molecular weight alcohols, or by the bead emulsion polymerization of a continuous phase comprising an aqueous solution of the monomers and the disperse phase of an hydrophobic organic solvent with a small amount of an emulsifier. Since the mixed ester (I) serves as an emulsifier, additional emulsifier need not be present. Exemplified catalysts are potassium persulphate/sodium metabisulphite, azobisisobutyronitrile, potassium persulphate and hydrogen peroxide. Specifications 963,902 and 996,486 are referred to.
