Abstract: The invention comprises complex metal compounds of azo dyes of formula F-Zn wherein F is an azo dye molecule containing a metallizable group and at least one water-solubilizing roup, Z is a group of formula wherein R1 is hydrogen, an aliphatic or cycloaliphati hydrocarbon radical, R2 is hydrogen or an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical and n is 1 or 2. The dyes may be prepared by metallizing suitable azo dyes containing vinylsulphonylamino groups with salts or organic hydroxycarboxylic acid complexes of manganese, iron, aluminium and, preferably, copper, chromium, cobalt and nickel. Azo dyes containing ethionylamino groups may be used and converted before, during or after metallization by treatment with alkaline reagents to vinyl-sulphonylamino-substituted dyes. The dyes may be used to colour polyamide or particularly cellulose fibres by the usual reactive dye processes. In examples the preparation of the metal complexes of monoazo and disazo dyes and of intermediate monoazo dyes is described.
