Abstract: A process for preparing salts of chiral carboxylic acids functionised with an alpha -oxygen, of the formula (1) where the symbols and indices have the following meaning: M: alkali metal, alkaline earth metal; B: -O-, -CR R -; R to R : e.g. H, alkyl; n: 0, 1; characterised in that a corresponding alcohol is taken up in water so that a 5 to 50% strength by weight mixture is formed, stoichiometric amounts of a base are added, which is optionally extended over the entire course of the reaction, a) 0.1 to 20% by weight, relative to the total suspension, of a metallic redox catalyst are added; b) an oxygen-containing gas is passed through this suspension until the desired degree of reaction is achieved; c) the catalyst is separated off and d) the compound of the formula (1) is isolated by spray-drying. The compounds of the formula (1) are obtained cleanly and in good yield.

Abstract: The invention provides a process for the manufacture of acetic acid, acetic aldehyde and ethanol by reaction in the gaseous phase of carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of catalysts containing rhodium and optionally promoters, at elevated temperature and pressure. In this process, the temperature is raised in the starting phase, where the catalyst is heated to the working temperature TR intended for continuous operation, in a range of from TO to TR, TO being 75 DEG to 125 DEG C. below TR, continuously or in steps of 10 DEG C. at most, in a period of time of from 100 to 1,000 hours; the temperature being raised by 10 DEG C. at most within any 10 hour interval.
