Abstract: The new compounds consist essentially of ethylene oxide/propylene oxide block polymer units and oxyalkyleneated alkylphenol/aldehyde resin units, which are linked by methylene groups. They are prepared by reacting a block polymer of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide and an oxyalkyleneated alkylphenol/aldehyde resin with formaldehyde. The new compounds constitute especially advantageous breaking agents for petroleum.

Abstract: Hydroxyalkyl and aryl oxides Method comprises reacting phenols with alkylene oxides at 40-130 degrees C (pref. 50-80) each phenolic -OH group reacting with 1 mole of alkylene oxide, in the presence of a solvent (1-3C alcohols, benzene, dioxan, tetrohydrofuran or acetone) and 0.05-1% of an alkaline catalyst comprising an alkali metal or one its alkaline compounds. The compounds prepared by this method are obtained in high yields and in a high state of purity, and can be used without further purification to prepare polyester resins.
