Abstract: The application describes a process for the preparation of N-(2,6-dialkylphenyl)-N-formylglycine derivatives of general formula I in which R and R denote alkyl, R denotes H, alkoxy or halogen, X denotes -C IDENTICAL N, -CON(R )2 or -COOR and R denotes H or alkyl. In this process, a formanilide of the formula II is reacted with an acetic acid derivative of the formula III in which Y denotes halogen, methylsulphonyloxy, benzenesulphonyloxy or toluenesulphonyloxy, in the presence of an anorganic base. The yields obtained are surprisingly high.

Component (d) is an aromatic, ketone or pyrollidone solvent.
