Abstract: The present process for preparing vinyl chloride by thermal cracking of 1,2-dichloroethanue in three distillation stages is characterized in that hydrogen chloride is first distilled off followed by vinyl chloride and finally entrained hydrogen chloride with vinyl chloride. When water being entrained in the last stage is not removed over the bottom it is introduced together with the head product back into the first stage and causes corrosion. Corrosion can be prevented by removal of water in the third distillation stage head, being carried out preferably by drying.

Abstract: In the present invention there is disclosed a process for preparing 1,2-dichloroethane by reacting ethylene with chlorine in the presence of a catalyst based on sodium chloride and iron(III) chloride, during which process the molar ratio of sodium chloride to iron(III) chloride is maintained below 0.5 all over the reaction. The proposed process is carried out at a temperature ranging from 50 to 105 degC and under positive pressure up to 0.1 MPa. The apparatus for making the above described process comprises a reactor (1) that is interconnected through the mediation of a piping (5) with a decompression tank (6) that is provided with a piping (7) for offtake of evaporated product and a piping (8) for backflow of the non-evaporated product, whereby a piping (11) for backflow of the product partial flow into the reactor (1) is branched from said pining (5).

Abstract: Process and apparatus for preparing 1,2-Dichloroethane by direct chlorinationIf in the reaction of ethylene with chlorine to form 1,2-dichloroethane (EDC) the catalyst components sodium chloride and iron(III) chloride are used in a molar ratio of below 0.5, then the EDC is obtained in sufficiently high purity to allow direct conversion to vinyl chloride. With maintenance of the stated molar ratio the reaction can be carried out very advantageously in terms of equipment and energy consumption, for example by vaporizing some of the EDC in an expansion vessel.

Abstract: In the preparation of vinyl chloride by thermal cracking of 1,2-dichloroethane, three distillation stages are used to distill off first hydrogen chloride, then vinyl chloride and finally entrained hydrogen chloride with vinyl chloride. If, in the last stage, entrained water is not drawn off via the bottom, it is recirculated with the top product to the first stage and causes corrosion. Removal of the water at the top of the third distillation stage, advantageously by drying, prevents the corrosion.
