    Abstract: PROCESS FOR MAKING 1,2-DICHLOROETHANE The disclosure relates to a process for making 1,2-di-chloroethane by reacting ethylene with chlorine in a solvent at a temperature lower than the boiling point of 1,2-dichlo-roethane and between 20 - 100.degree.C under a pressure of 1 - 15 bars in the presence of a catalyst mixture consisting of anhydrous iron(III)chloride and a nitrogen base or a salt of said base and, optionally an inhibitor reducing the formation of by-products, and distillatively separating the 1,2dichloroethane from the chlorination mixture. To this end, the disclosure provides for the chlorination mixture to be introduced into a distilling column, for the 1,2-dichloro-ethane to be distilled off at most until catalyst commences separating, and for a portion of the remaining liquid still product to be recycled into the reaction zone for further reaction of ethylene with chlorine.
