    Abstract: The invention provides an improved process for the manufacture of N,N,N',N'-tetraacetylethylenediamine by acetylation of N,N'-diacetylethylenediamine with acetic anhydride, by using these two starting components in a weight ratio of from 1:1 to 1:10, stopping the acetylation before attaining the reaction equilibrium between N,N'-diacetylethylenediamine and N,N,N',N'-tetraacetylethylenediamine, preferably after having attained a conversion rate of from 20 to 70 mol % of tetraacetylethylenediamine, relative to diacetylethylenediamine, purifying the reaction mixture in order to remove the dyeing impurities, and recycling to the acetylation the purified, incompletely reacted components. Purification may be carried out by vacuum distillation or by means of an adsorbent, for example bleaching earth or active charcoal. Optionally, from 0.01 to 0.3 part by weight of ketene per part by weight of diacetylethylenediamine are added to the starting components. The process may be carried out batchwise or continuously, and it gives a practically colorless product with high yield (more than 97%).

    Abstract: A device for the biological purification of waste water and for the degasification and clarification of a sludge-water mixture resulting from the biological purification includes a reactor container defining a chamber, means for introducing air, waste water and activated sludge into the chamber and means for discharging overflowing sludge-water mixture from the reactor container (activation chamber). A guide element is disposed within the chamber for maintaining a loop-shaped flow therein. A section of the wall of the reactor container is surrounded by a jacket, the lower end of which is joined to the periphery of the wall of the reactor container intermediate its ends and the upper end of which is substantially concentric to and spaced outwardly from the container; the lower portion of the jacket may have an inverted frusto-conical configuration; the jacket defines with the reactor container an annular space around the container, a portion of said space being adapted for settling of sludge out of the sludge-water mixture overflow. An inlet element and a discharge trough are arranged about the reactor container. The overflow from the reactor container discharges into the inlet element and passes via outlet means to the settling portion of said annular space, wherein sludge separates from effluent of the sludge-water mixture. Effluent from the mixture passes into the discharge trough for removal via another outlet means from the apparatus.

    Abstract: Novel benzenesulphonyl ureas of the formula and physiologically acceptable salts thereof, wherein R and R1 are each a hydrogen or halogen atom or an alkoxy, acyl, alkyl, haloalkyl, aminoalkyl, hydroxyalkyl, alkenyl, haloalkenyl, aminoalkenyl or hydroxyalkenyl group and R1 may also be an amino or acylamino group are made by (a) reacting an R,R1-substituted benzenesulphonyl isocyanate, or a corresponding carbamic acid ester or halide thiocarbamic ester or urea with aminonortricyclene or its salts; (b) reacting a benzenesulphonamide or its salt with nortricyclyl-isocyanate, a nortricyclyl-carbamic ester or halide, a nortricyclyl thiocarbamic ester or nortricyclyl-urea; (c) reacting a benzenesulphonic acid N-halo-amide with nortricyclyl formamide; (d) reacting a benzenesulphonyl halide with nortricyclyl urea isourea ether, isothiourea ether, guanidine or parabanic acid and hydrolysing the resulting isourea, isothiourea, guanidine or parabanic acid derivatives; (e) treating a corresponding benzenesulphonyl thiourea to replace the sulphur atom by an oxygen atom or (f) oxidizing corresponding benzenesulphinyl or benzenesulpheny ureas. Pharmaceutical preparations having hypoglycaemic properties comprise the above compounds in admixture or conjunction with a carrier, preferably in unit dosage form adapted to oral administration e.g. tablets.
