Abstract: HOE 78/F 050 CARRIER CATALYST FOR THE PREPARATION OF VINYL ACETATE FROM ETHYLENE, ACETIC ACID AND OXYGEN IN THE GASEOUS PHASE HOE 78/F 050 of the disclosure: The carriers contain common active components, namely noble metals of the 8th sub-group or compounds thereof, and as activators alkali metal compounds, alkaline earth metal compounds or cadmium compounds. The carriers, too, consist of common materials, such as silicic acid. A novel feature is to be seen in the shape of the carrier particles which are designed as rod sections having a star-shaped cross section (Figures 1 to 7) or as ribbed rods (Figure 8). In relation to the apparent density and thus in relation to the amount of noble metal employed, a considerably higher space-time yield is reached than with carrier particles of a conventional shape.

Vinyl acetate is prepared by reacting ethylene, molecular oxygen and acetic acid in the gaseous state in the presence of a catalyst comprising a compound of palladium and an acetate of a metal of main group I and/or of a metal of Group 2 of the Mendeleef Periodic Table, or a mixture of such acetates, as well as, if desired, a redox system, wherein further amounts of the catalytically active acetate or acetates are added to the reaction zone during the reaction in order to compensate for any loss thereof during the reaction. Examples describe various ways of accomplishing the addition, both continuously as is preferred, and discontinuously. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,188,737.
