Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the removal of high-boiling and polymer fractions from the acetic acid fraction which is obtained during the separation of the crude product from the reaction of acetic acid, ethylene and oxygen on a catalyst in the gas phase to give vinyl acetate. The acetic acid is distilled off from the acetic acid fraction down to a residual content of 30 to 95% by weight. At least sufficient water is then added to the residue such that an acetic acid-containing aqueous phase and a high-boiling and polymer-containing tar phase is formed. Instead of first distilling off the acetic acid and then adding water to the residue, the acetic acid can also be distilled off with addition of water or water vapour such that a high-boiling and polymer-containing bottom having a water content of 3 to 30% by weight remains.
