Abstract: Aqueous mercerizing solutions containing an alkali metal hydroxide and an alkali metal salt of a phosphinic acid of the formula O R1 PARALLEL ANGLE P-OH R2 in which R1 is methyl or ethyl and R2 is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical of 4 to 12 carbon atoms, and the use of these solutions for mercerizing cellulosic fibrous materials.
