    Abstract: FILM-AND FIBER-FORMING POLYESTERS, OPTIONALLY ALSO POLYESTERS SUITABLE FOR THE PROCESSING OF PLASTIC ARTICLES, ARE PREPARED STARTING FROM DIOLS AND DICARBOXYLIC ACID/DICARBOXYLIC ACID ALKYL ESTER MIXTURE, IN WHICH THE PROPORTION OF THE NUMBER OF FREE CARBOXYL GROUPS SO THAT OF THE ESTERIFIED CARBOXYL GROUPS IS AT LEAST 60:40. THESE STARTING SUBSTANCES ARE REACTED TO FORM THE BIS-DIOL-DICARBOXYLIC ACID ESTERS AND THEIR LOWER OLIGOMERS, AND THESE SUBSTANCES ARE THEN POLYCONDENSED IN KNOWN MANNER TO FORM HIGH MOLECULAR WEIGHT POLYESTERS. PREFERABLY, POLYETHYLENETEREPHTHALATE IS PREPARED ACCORDING TO THIS PROCESS.

    Abstract: Polyvinyl alcohol is prepared by hydrolysing or alcoholysing a polymer of a vinyl ester of a monocarboxylic acid in the presence of an acid catalyst and a dialdehyde, the aldehyde groups of which are separated by at least one carbon atom. Specified polyvinyl esters are polyvinyl formate, acetate, propionate, butyrate and stearate. Specified aldehydes are terephthalic aldehyde, cyclohexane dial-1,4, propane dial, butane dial, pentane dial, hexane dial, phthalic aldehyde, isophthalic aldehyde and diphenyl dial-4,41. Alcoholysis may be effected in the presence of a C1-4 alkanol, e.g. methanol. Specified acid catalysts are perchloric, sulphuric, hydrochloric and sulpho acids. Partial conversions may be effected by using a limited quantity of water or catalyst, regulating the reaction temperature, or neutralizing the catalyst. In examples, polyvinyl acetate is alcoholysed (1) in methanol in the presence of sulphuric acid and cyclohexane dial-1,4 and (2 and 3) in aqueous methanol in the presence of perchloric acid and terephthalic aldehyde.

    Abstract: C3-8 a -olefins such as propylene, butene-1, 3-methylbutene-1 or styrene are polymerized to products of more than 90% isotactic content, by use of a solid catalyst prepared by reacting an alkyl aluminium halide with TiCl4 in a reaction medium in the range of - 20 to + 40 DEG C. and in molar ratio of 0,5 to 2:1 and then heating the catalyst at 40-150 DEG C., which catalyst is activated with an organoaluminium compound, preferably an alkyl aluminium halide. The catalyst may be separated from the reaction medium and washed with an inert solvent, before or after the heat treatment; or the latter may be carried out by washing the catalyst with inert solvent at a raised temperature. Optically, the heat treatment is effected in presence of diphenyl ether, tetrahydrofurane, dioxane, sodium chloride or an organoaluminium compound.
