Abstract: Phosphonocarboxylic acids of formula (I) are new: (where each r is independently, H, (halogenated) 1-18C alkyl, alkali metal or ammonium). Cpds. (I), esp. those where the R's in the phosphonic acid gps. contain 6-8C and those in the carboxylic acid gps. are (m)ethyl, are useful as plasticisers for PVC; they also confer excellent flame retarding properties to the plasticised compsn. cpds. (I) where R is H, alkali metal or ammonium are also useful as setting retarders for plaster and as complexants for heavy metal ions in water; in the latter application they are effective in sub-stoichiometric amts. to preven the pptn. pitation of ca salts, and find especial use in cleaning glass objects.
