Abstract: PROCESS FOR THE DYEING AND PRINTING OF SYNTHETIC POLYAMIDES It had been found that dyestuffs of the formula (1), in which p stands for an integer of from 1 to 6, and W represents, as a water-solubilizing group, the sulfo group, the sulfato group (-OSO3H), the thiosulfato group (-S-SO3H), the carboxyl group, the phosphato group (-OPO3H2), the phosphonic acid group (-PO(OH)2) or the phosphonic acid-semi-ester group of the formula -PO(OR)OH, wherein R represents an alkyl radical of from 1 to 5 carbon atoms, preferably the methyl or ethyl radical, are very suitable in dyeing and printing processes of synthetic polyamide fiber materials and yield brilliant and very fast dyeings and prints on these materials, especially even dyeings of textured polyamide f which have differences in stretching.

The new dyestuffs are very suitable for the dyeing of synthetic materials such as polyethylene-glycol torephthalate, acetyl cellulose or polyamides. They yield brilliant greenish yellow to orange red shades which have a good fastness to light and to thermofixation. They are also very suitable for the dyeing of fibre-forming polymers such as for example polyethylene-glycol terephthalate in the mass. Furthermore, a big part of the dyestuffs can be used for dyeing synthetic fibre materials sucll as polyester fibres from organic solvents, for example perchloroethylene.

The chlorination may be carried out using Cl 2 or hypochlorite and the exemplified product is 4-chloronaphthalic anhydride.

These dyestuffs yield brilliant yellow to red dyeings in synthetic polymers especially in polyethylene terephthalate with an intense yellow green to orange fluorescence. Due to their high fluorescence they can also be used for preparing daylight fluorescent pigments.

Abstract: A process for the preparation of 4-bromo-naphthalic acid anhydride by bromination of an alkali metal salt of naphthalic acid in an aqueous medium at a pH of 6.8 to 9 by dropwise adding 0.55 to 0.65 mol of bromine per mol of naphthalic acid and oxidizing the bromine at the same pH-value with chlorine. By this process 4-bromo-naphthalic acid anhydride can be obtained in a quantitative yield whereby the formation of 4-chloro-naphthalic acid is avoided.

Y is oxygen or sulphur and n is zero, 1, 2, or 3. Resins include cross linked polyesters, amideformaldehydes and amino-triazine formaldehydes. Preferred dyes are benzoxanthenes and benzothioxanthenes prepared by heating diazonium salts in the presence of Cu or Cu salts. Pigment is prepared by adding benzoxanthene- 3,4-dicarboxylic acid anhydride-di-sulphonic acid and resin, then paraformaldehyde to p-toluene sulphonamide at 130‹ C. The temperature is increased to 160-170‹ C. and on cooling a brittle material forms which is ground to a particle size of 0À1-30 Á. The pigment is used for paint, laquer, printing ink or to colour plastics material.
