The silazane polymers according to the invention containing in SiCl groups can be reacted with ammonia to give polysilazanes, which can themselves be pyrolyzed to give silicon nitride-containing ceramic materials.

The sinterable ceramic powder is prepared by dissolving the polysilazane of formula (I) ¢CH3SiHNH!n¢CH3SiN!n where n is about 10 to 12, in an organic solvent, suspending a pulverulent sinter aid in this solution and then evaporating the solvent and pyrolyzing the residue in an inert gas atmosphere at 500 to 1600.degree.C. The resulting ceramic powder can be used to form a shaped article and then to manufacture silicon nitride ceramic by sintering. It is also possible, however, to form a shaped article from the as yet unpyrolyzed residue obtained after evaporation of the solvent, and then to pyrolyze and sinter said article. The ceramic obtained can be used to manufacture components subject to high mechanical, thermal and corrosive stress.

The process comprises reacting excess ammonia with a mixture of R1R2SiCl2 and Cl2R3Si-CH2CH2-SiR3Cl2 at -70 to +100.degree.C, where the radicals independently of one another have the following meanings: R1, R2 = H, C1-C5 alkyl or C2-C6 alkenyl and R3 = C1-C6 alkyl or C2-C6 alkenyl. The oligomeric silazanes can easily be converted into polymeric chlorosilazanes, which in turn can be converted with high yield into ceramic materials containing silicon nitride.
