Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new subject compound that comprises a specific silylalkyl or silylalkenyl compound, resistant to hydrolysis, forms a liquid crystal mixture together with other components and is useful as an electrooptical switching element and as a display unit with high chemical stability. SOLUTION: This new liquid crystalline silylalkyl or silylalkenyl compound is represented by formula I [R is a group of formula II (R to R are each a 1-16C straight chain alkyl, a 3-8C cyclic alkyl; G is H and/or an 1-16C alkylene in which one CH2 or two CH2 not adjacent to each other may be replaced with O, OCO or COO under the conditions that only C atom having a C atom as an adjacent atom bonds to a Si atom); A to A is each 1,4- phenylene, trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, pyridine-2,5-diyl; M and M are each COO, OCO, CH2 O or the like; G is the same as G ; j, k, l, m, n are 0, 1; j+l+n is 2, 3]. This compound resists to hydrolysis, forms a liquid crystalline mixture with other components and is useful as an electrooptical switching element and as a display unit.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce the subject new compound, respectively having a silicon group-containing group and an oxygen ring group at both terminals and capable of providing excellent (photo)chemical and thermal stabilities, mixing compatibility, further a short switching time and high effective switching angle. SOLUTION: This compound is represented by formula I R is group represented by formula II [R and R are each H, a (branched) 1-16C alkylene, etc.], etc.; A to A are each 1,4-phenylene, etc.; M and M are each CO-O, etc.; G is a (branched) 1-16C alkylene, etc., in which Si is bonded to only C having H and/or C as an adjacent atom; R to R are each a (branched) 1-16C alkylene, etc.; (j) to (n) are each 0 or 1 and [(j)+(l)+(n)] is 2 or 3}, e.g. 4-[5(4 butyldimethylsilylbutyloxy)pyrimidin-2-yl]phenyl(2R,3R) 3propyloxirane-2- carboxylate. The compound represented by formula I is obtained by reacting a compound represented by the formula R (-A )j (-M )k (-A )l (-M )m (-A )n -X (X is OH, etc.) with a compound represented by formula III (Y is H, OH, etc.).
