    Abstract: PURPOSE: To improve the lightness, contrast and switching of a liq. crystal display by incorporating a lipophilic compd., a lipophilic property imparting compd. or its mixture into at least one of the constituent elements of the liq. crystal display. CONSTITUTION: In order to improve the max. lightness, max. contrast and display speed of a liq. crystal display, an orienting layer of polyimide or polyamide as one of the constituent elements of the display is composed of 50-99.99wt.% polyimide or polyamide and 0.01-50wt.% one or more kinds of lipophilic compds. or lipophilic property imparting compds. The compds. may be incorporated into an insulating layer, an electrode, a transparent substrate or a polarizing plate. The lipophilic compds. may be monomer, oligomer or polymer compds. and have low polarity and high lipophilic characteristics.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide a ferroelectric liquid crystal(FLC) display which does not exhibit an optical hysteresis even if the value of spontaneous polarization is high by using an FLC mixture having the high spontaneous polarization and the natural spiral pitch smaller than half the thickness of the layer. CONSTITUTION: The FLC display, which can be operated by using a surface stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal SSFLC technique, is of 1 to 10μm and more particularly 1.2 to 3μm in the thickness of the layer. The ferroelectric liquid crystal(FLC) mixture which exhibits the high spontaneous polarization PS>20nC.cm (measured at 25 deg.C) and of which the natural spiral pitch is below half the thickness of the layer of the SSFLC display is utilized for the FLC display. The characteristics exhibiting the high spontaneous polarization, the first assigned spiral pitch at a smectic phase and the second assigned spiral pitch as a cholesteric phase are satisfied by an asymmetrical liquid crystal base mixture added with a slight amt. of symmetrical additive impurities. The preferable compds. in this asymmetrical liquid crystal base mixture are expressed by formulas (I) and (II).
