Abstract: A two-hop communications system utilizing two collocated spacecraft (Se and Sw) and two remote intersatellite exchange (RISE) means (Re and Rw) provides for communications between ground stations located in two or more defined subregions. Each satellite includes wide band transponders for relaying ground station transmissions to the RISEs. The RISEs convert first hop frequency division multiplexed (FDM) signals to time division multiplexed (TDM) for the second hop. Signals are coded by frequency, polarization and direction so as to avoid loss of bandwidth due to the two-hop approach.

Abstract: Un système de communications à deux étapes qui utilise deux véhicules spatiaux colloqués (Se et Sw) et deux dispositifs (Re et RW) d'échange à distance entre satellites (RISE) établit des communications entre les stations au sol situées en deux ou plusieurs sous-régions définies. Chaque satellite comprend des récepteurs-émetteurs de large bande pour relayer aux dispositifs RISE des transmissions des stations au sol. Les dispositifs RISE convertissent des signaux multiplexés à division de fréquence (FDM) de la première étape en signaux multiplexés à division de temps (TDM) pour la deuxième étape. Les signaux sont codés selon leur fréquence, leur polarisation et leur direction afin d'éviter des pertes de la largeur de bande dues à l'approche en deux étapes.
