    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and method for eliminating reported duplication by reducing time needed to report global errors. SOLUTION: These method and system for eliminating duplicate reported errors in a logically partitioned multiprocessing system are disclosed. The method and system comprise a step for providing a single source for receiving a plurality of related globally reported errors and a step for filtering the plurality of related globally reported errors such that only one call for service is provided. Accordingly, through the use of a system and method in accordance with the present invention when a global fault is reported by several OS partitions, only one call for service is initiated from a hardware console. In doing so, a service representative will not make repeated calls for the same reported fault. Moreover, in the case that a different service representative is responsible for different partitions, only one of the representatives will respond to the fault report.

In response to one or more of commands, the system displays a service action even log including the service action plan, and a service history log including any history of service repairs related to the service action plan. The service representative can partially or fully apply the service action plan to the repair, and subsequently flag the service action event entry as incomplete or closed, respectively.

    Abstract: In accordance with the method and system of the present invention, a local processor utilizes registers arranged in a fault/mask/cache fashion for environmental control and sensing within a data processing system. The local processor continuously reads input data from a variety of environmental sensors in order to determine if a threshold level has been reached and a fault condition exists. Cache registers allow the local processor to store/pass detailed sensor information to system firmware within system processor(s). The local processor sets a fault bit within a fault register designed to cause an interrupt to the system level firmware if any of its bits are non-zero, indicating that a fault condition has occurred. A mask register is designed to allow the interaction of both the local processor and system processor(s) when an interrupt is being serviced and help keeps track of which interrupts are being serviced and which are yet to be serviced in the case of multiple interrupt sources. The system firmware will service the interrupt and set the mask bit. The action will signal the local processor that the system has acknowledged the interrupt and will take the appropriate action. The local processor may now post another fault, exactly like the first fault, by clearing the mask bit and causing a subsequent interrupt to the system. The fault, mask, cache, and both local and system processor(s) work together to provide a positive interlock for synchronizing their actions with each other.

    Abstract: A method for locating a defective component in a data processing system duri ng system startup is disclosed. Each component within the data processing system is assigned a location code. Then, a progress code is associated with a location code and a function bein g loaded to, tested, or executed in a component. After supplying power to the data processing system , the components of the data processing system are initialized and tested to establish a configuration. During the initialization and testing, a location code of a component and a correspondi ng progress code are displayed on a display panel. In response to a system hang, a defective component can be identified utilizing the location code and the progress code displayed on the display panel.
