    Abstract: PURPOSE: To trace a graphic by a cursor without requiring previous instructions for a trace starting point and a tracing direction by determining a point on a display screen in accordance with an inputted signal, determining a point on a graphic object close to the determined screen position and displaying a cursor on the determined object point. CONSTITUTION: The cursor movement control device consists of a control device 1, an arithmetic unit 2, a display control device 3, a display 4, a position coordinate display device 9, a ratio display device 10, a data storage area 11, a graphic object selecting device 12, and so on. A signal for indicating a certain position on the display screen is inputted, one of continuous segments displayed on the screen and a point Qi on the screen are determined in accordance with the inputted signal, a point Pi obtained by projecting the point Qi to the segment is determined and a cursor is displayed on the point Pi. Consequently a graphic can be traced by the cursor without requiring the previous instructions of a trace starting point and a tracing direction.

Graphics objects can thus be tracked by means of a cursor without requiring the specification of points or directions prior to tracking thereby providing the user with direct control of the movement of a cursor constrained onto graphics object.

    Abstract: The constraint mode provided by this invention allows a user to move a cursor of a pointing device, such as a mouse cursor, just along lines and curves on a graphics screen. The user can select a point located on lines and curves correctly even though the pointing device is moved quite roughly. The user can also select a point that divides a segment by an arbitrary ratio, or a point that divides the segment into a plurality of equal parts. The method basically comprises the steps of entering a signal for pointing to a position on a display screen and determining a point on the display screen in response to the entered signal. A point is then determined on the graphics object near to that point determined on the display screen. A cursor is thus displayed at the determined point on the graphics object.
