    Abstract: 1395678 Liquid crystal compositions INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 4 July 1973 [3 Aug 1972] 31854/73 Heading C4X [Also in Division C2] To a nematic liquid crystal material is added an organic dopant which provides ions in which the charge is effectively distributed over several atoms and is shielded from the charge of the counterions by a non-poar shell, whereby the resistivity of the nematic material is reduced, and as described in relation to dynamic scattering materials, the threshold voltage is reduced and the cut-off frequency raised. In some cases the undoped material does not exhibit dynamic scattering. The dopant, preferably forming 0À01 to 5% by weight of the composition, may contain large organic ions, or be a precursor thereof, or may be a compound containing chelated alkali metal ions. In the latter class the chelating agent may be dicyclohexyl-18-crown- 6 ether such being reacted with any one of a number of alkali metal salts of organic anions, or the dibenzo-18-crown-6 ether analogues. The former class appears to consist of generally unrelated materials, e.g. hexaphenylethane; tetrabutylammonium tetraphenylforide; and quinhydrone. The dopant may also be tributylphosphine oxide lithium bromide or triphenylphosphine oxide lithium bromide.

    Abstract: A new class of stable trans-stilbene compounds, some displaying nematic mesophases at or near room temperature and others in a range up to 100 DEG C., are useful in liquid crystal display devices. Exemplary compounds are 4-butoxy, 4'-n-butyl- beta -chloro trans-stilbene, having a nematic range of 30 DEG -52 DEG C., 4-ethoxy, 4'-n-butyl- beta -chloro trans-stilbene, having a nematic range of 29 DEG -58 DEG C., and 4-ethoxy, 4'-(2-methylbutyl)- beta -chloro trans-stilbene, having a nematic range of 29 DEG -34 DEG C.; a mixture containing 60 mole-% 4-ethoxy, 4'-n-butyl- beta -chloro trans-stilbene and 40 mole-% 4-ethoxy-4'-n-octyl- beta -chloro trans-stilbene has a nematic range of 8 DEG -59 DEG C.

    Abstract: There are described herein organic electronic devices of the acceptor-donor (A-D), acceptor-donor-acceptor (A-D-A), donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D), acceptor-donor-acceptor-donor (A-D-A-D), types analogous to the p-n, p-n-p, n-p-n and p-n-p-n types in typical semiconductor devices. The A-D device suitably comprises a support or substrate upon which there is provided a layer of a conductive metal. On this metallic layer, there is provided in a thickness of about 25 to 50 Angstroms, a barrier layer organic compound. On the latter compound, there is provided a deposited metal conductor, the metal depositing suitably being effected by a technique such as vapor deposition. The A-D-A and D-A-D devices comprise a semiconductor or metallic body, on each surface of which there is provided in about a 25 to 50 Angstrom thickness, the aforementioned barrier layer compound. On each compound layer there is deposited a metal conductor. The barrier layer compound suitably is one whose molecules consist of two nonsymmetric, i.e., not same energy level, reversible redox portions separated by a tunneling bridge.
