Abstract: A copier document feed system includes a document stack tray (208) positioned over an exposure platen feed system (210). A document from the stack is fed to the platen feed system by a first turnaround system (214, 212). After exposure the document is fed to a deflector (218) to either the top (duplex path) or to the bottom (simplex path) of a second turnaround system (224, 222) or to a further tray (SADF path). When the document is fed to the bottom of the second turnaround system, this system drives it round back to the document stack tray. When the document is fed to the top of the second turnaround system, the feed direction of this sytem is reversed to feed the document, inverted, back to the exposure platen. The exposure platen feed system, and first and second turnaround systems are each driven by a separate servo system (254 260, and 248).

Abstract: Sheet feeder having adaptive mechanism for assuring dependable automatic operation when the stack of sheets to be fed consists of sheets having varying thicknesses and weights. In a sheet feeder having pickers (102) to move a document from the top of a stack of sheets supported by a moveable table (10) to a feedin position, the latter possibly including a vacuum belt (106) for moving the document, sensors (132, 134) supply signals to indicate a sheet has been picked. After moving the pickers and table to initial positions, the controller (150) moves the picker to a predetermined reference position. If a sheet is picked above or below the predetermined initial position, the position of the table is adjusted accordingly. In a second embodiment in a recirculating automatic sheet feeder, the table is initially positioned then after feeding the sheets from the stack once, it is initialized at a second predetermined position depending on the number of documents in the stack and on the position of the table prior to picking the documents a second time.

Abstract: An automatic vacuum document feeder particularly adapted for feeding sheet-like documents in seriatim from a stack onto a utilization device, such as the document platen of a convenience copier. The documents are disposed in a tray. A vacuum lifter descends and lifts the topmost document along a vertical path to a position above the stack and beyond the bottom surface of a vacuum transport. The vacuum transport is disposed in a plane perpendicular to the vertical path of the vacuum lifter. The vacuum transport strips the document from the vacuum lifter and transports the document to the utilization device. The entire system is configured so that there is no relative motion occurring between the document being transported and the transport hardware. A document restraint device, including air jets and stripper fingers, coact with the stack to eliminate double feed.
