Abstract: Two spacially cooperating rotary transformer windings are supported with accurate mechanical separation by a thrust gas bearing having a fixed position hydrostatic gas bearing member and a movable piston which integrally carries a movable hydrostatic gas bearing member. One transformer winding is carried by the fixed bearing member. The other cooperating transformer winding is supported by a headwheel. This headwheel is air bearing supported by the opposing forces supplied by the fixed and the movable bearing members, respectively. Dimensional manufacturing and operating tolerance is accomodated by movement of the piston, to thereby accurately maintain a desired mechanical spacing between the two transformer windings.

Abstract: Sheet feed and aligning apparatus receives sheets fed in skewed orientation from a stack (18). A roller pair (46) initially advances the sheets without altering the skew angle, to further roller pairs (48, 56). As these pairs advance the sheet, sensors (68 and a further one, not shown) positioned along a line at an angle to the direction of sheet feed, sense its leading edge. In accordance with the timing of this sensing, drive means (42,46) for the further roller pairs are independently controlled to correct the skew.

Abstract: To feed a document (18) to a registered position on a platen (12) the sheet is first fed by a vacuum transport system (16, 24, 26) over the platen to a point at which its leading edge is beyond a sensor (46). The transport system is then reversed and the sheet is directed back towards the platen to its registration point (e.g. 14) under the control of a servo system (30) which employs a signal from the sensor indicating the sheet leaving the sensor and predetermined input data to select the registration position on the platen.

Abstract: A flexible disk drive (11) is disclosed that is optimized for automated manufacture. The critical elements of the disk drive are divided into two functional groups, one of which includes the elements for loading and unloading the disk cartridge and the other of which includes the element for reading and writing on the flexible disk within the cartridge, with the elements of each group being precisely registered with respect to one another on separate frame members. The frame members are coarsely registered with respect to one another and snapped together, after separate assembly of at least most of the elements on the separate frame members has been completed, and fine position registration of the flexible disk to the spindle is thereafter achieved during each loading operation of a flexible disk into the assembly disk drive by collet centering and clamping the disk to the spindle. By this arrangement, automated methods of manufacture can be effectively carried out for assembly of each member as well as final assembly of the frame members.

Abstract: Documents fed serially from a document reproduction machine 10 are fed by a vacuum belt feed system 21 to sheet accumulation and stapling system 22. When at the registration position in system 22, the leading edge of each sheet has passed output bin 14, and the trailing portion is supported either by platform 16 or sheet sets thereon. After a set is accumulated in system 22, it is stapled and then ejected back into bin 14.

Abstract: Electronic alignment of paper feeding components in a machine such as an electrophotographic copier machine is achieved by placing an original master containing vernier calibrations on the document glass and a target master containing vernier calibrations in the copy paper bin. Thereupon, the machine is operated to produce a copy of the original master onto the target master producing a double set of vernier calibrations on the target master, which, when compared, provides information relating to skew angle, side edge relationship and leading edge alignment of the image to the copy paper. The vernier calibrations provide data which are keyed into a microprocessor controlled copy feeding servo mechanism to correct copy paper position and remove misalignment. The operation is repeated for various combinations of paper feed paths with techniques of original document placement and for duplex operation so that the copy paper matches image position for all modes of copier operation. For printer mode of operation, the master vernier is printed to produce the needed image. In addition, sensors are located in the copy paper path to automatically correct for deviations in the copy sheet feeding unit, caused by wear, for example, over a period of time. Sensors are also located in the document feeder so that corrections in the position of the copy paper may be made on an individualized and dynamic basis to electronically correct for misalignment of individual originals on the document glass.

Abstract: A copier document feed system includes a document stack tray (208) positioned over an exposure platen feed system (210). A document from the stack is fed to the platen feed system by a first turnaround system (214, 212). After exposure the document is fed to a deflector (218) to either the top (duplex path) or to the bottom (simplex path) of a second turnaround system (224, 222) or to a further tray (SADF path). When the document is fed to the bottom of the second turnaround system, this system drives it round back to the document stack tray. When the document is fed to the top of the second turnaround system, the feed direction of this sytem is reversed to feed the document, inverted, back to the exposure platen. The exposure platen feed system, and first and second turnaround systems are each driven by a separate servo system (254 260, and 248).
