Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide information to relate between a class file and an instrumentation. SOLUTION: In a support method of user-specific instrumentation, when loading a class, a hook specifying a major code and a minor code for each method, which is instrumented to a method name, is outputted to, for example, a trace record. Next, when making the method an entry or an exit, a hook specifying the entry or the exit is also outputted to the record. When the record is performed in a post-processing, since it becomes enabling to acquire the information to relate the class file to the instrumentation from the record in a trace stream, the information is used for a merge.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved method and device for monitoring the performance of a data processing system. SOLUTION: A cyclically generated event such as timer interruption or the like is detected and a stack related to a program is identified in response to the detection of such an event. The stack is investigated and respective routines (and specified calling point or offset) executed at present relating to the program are identified. The respective routines (and offset) are indicated as nodes inside a tree structure.

Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided that measures performance in a computer system (100) having a windowed graphic display (202). The method and apparatus provides for a performance survey application (208) which allows for detecting whether performance of the computer system (100) has degraded. An indication (210) is provided on the display (202). Also provided on the display is a survey button that when clicked by the user generates a record indicating that perceived performance is poor. The status of the system is updated in response to user clicks. This in turn causes appropriate updates in the display. Finally, the record associated with the user's click is written to the appropriate memory location. In so doing, a system is provided that allows for continuous indication of the performance of the computer system.

Abstract: For profiling a program carried out in a data processing system, it is necessary to scan the basic profiling of the program being run and for each scanning period to generate a tree-data structure in which nodes represent the tree-data structure of the routines of the programs carried out during the scanning period. As a reaction to the notification that the program is concluded, the tree-data structures of all the scanning period are merged to a resulting tree-data structure.

Abstract: An application for use in a data processing system contains instrumentation code with calls to a probe module (class) containing first and second sub-programs. If no profiling or tracing actions are required then the application is deployed with a first version of the module wherein the first and second sub-programs have null code. If profiling is desired a second version if the probe module having appropriate code for profiling and monitoring the performance of the data processing system is deployed. The probe class can be used to obtain timing information and the timing information can be output to a trace file. The application can be a Java servlet to obtain information about time spent by Java code processing HTTP transactions in a web server.

Abstract: A method and system for profiling a program using periodic trace sampling is provided. During the execution of the program, sample-based profiling of the executing program is performed-for a predetermined period, a profiler performs trace processing for the program, after which the profiler pauses and does not perform trace processing for a predetermined period. The periods controlling the profiler may be selected by a user, and the periods may be measured by temporal or non-temporal metrics. The profiler cycles through these periods, during which selected events are processed to generate a profile of the execution flows within the program. For each sample period, a tree data structure is generated in which nodes of the tree data structure represent the routines of the program that execute during the sample period, as may be indicated by entry and exit events caused by the execution of the routines. When the execution of the program is complete, the tree data structures from each sample period are merged into a resulting tree data structure.
