Abstract: 1,053,153. Selective printing. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. June 16, 1965 [June 29, 1964], No. 25378/65. Heading B6F. [Also in Division G2] An electrostatic recording apparatus comprises a number of recording heads 40, 42, 44, 46, 48 mounted on a belt 60 and spaced widthwise and lengthwise of the belt so that each head passes over a different vertical line of a stationary sheet 10 at a recording station 26, Fig. 1 (not shown) and the heads pass in succession across the sheet. Each head may comprise ten styli in a row as described in Specification 1,053,152, the styli being energized by pulses to produce on the sheet dot electrostatic charges on the sheet representing characters. The styli in the heads 40, 44, 48 are connected by conductors running widthwise of the belt to associated groups of conductors 50, 54, 58 situated adjacent to the right-hand edge of the belt 60 and the styli in the heads 42, 46 are connected to associated groups of conductors 52, 56 situated adjacent to the left-hand edge of the belt 60. Sets of brushes 32, 34 lie in the paths of the groups of conductors 50 ... 58 and are connected in parallel to electronic circuitry 28, Fig. 1, supplying signals corresponding to the matter to be printed. The band 60 has at one edge sprocket holes 64 engaged by sprockets on a driving roller 12a and at the other edge has evenly spaced conductive strips 66 engaged by brushes 36 connected to electronic circuitry to control character spacing. After the sheet 10 has received the charges, it passes to a station 70 where magnetic particles 72 are applied thereto by magnetic brushes 78 on a rotary member 76. Subsequently, the developed image is fixed by heat from an electrical plate 84 at a station 82. Finally, the sheet is delivered at 86. Sheet-supplying mechanism.-The sheets 10 are fed to the recording station 26 from a stack 16 by intermittently-rotated rollers 14, 11.

Abstract: 1,036,094. Image scanning apparatus. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. May 6, 1963 [May 7, 1962], No. 17737/63. Heading H4F. [Also in Division G4] A document 4, Fig. 2, is traversed through an arcuate guide member 6 and is scanned by a rotating member bearing a number (6 as illustrated) of optical assemblies each comprised of a ribbon light source 19 with associated condenser lens 20 and pairs of objective lenses 17, 18 by means of which light reflected from the document is directed to an array of stationary light fibres 21, the lower ends of fibres 21 being closely arranged in a row parallel to the axis of the rotating member and the upper ends being connected to individual photo-multipliers 10. The light sources illuminate the document over a distance slightly greater than the height of a line of characters. The light fibres accept light over an angle (60 degrees in the example illustrated) sufficient to accommodate the full width scan of the document. In a second arrangement, Fig. 3, the rotating member 8 carries three groups of light fibres 26, 27, 28 which terminate at one end at the periphery of the disc, Fig. 4, and at the other end, Fig. 5, terminate in a circular array in a disc 30 with corresponding fibres in the three groups brought together. Light from disc 30 is directed by way of reflectors 32, 34 and lens 33 to a dove prism 35 and then by way of lens 36 to a stationary circular array of light fibres 37 whose ends are connected to individual photo-multipliers 10. The dove prism is rotated at half the speed of member 8 by gears 24, 25. As member 8 rotates to cause scanning across document 4 the resulting rotating array of image points formed at disc 30 is formed as an image on fibres 37 and maintained stationary by the half-speed counterrotation of prism 35. Mirrors 32, 34 and lens 33 may be dispensed with by placing prism 35 in optical alignment with disc 30. A lens may be provided on member 8 in alignment with the ends of each group of fibres 26, 27, 28, Fig. 6 (not shown).
