Abstract: 1280086 Multi-stage amplifiers INTERTIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 25 Nov 1970 [11 Dec 1969] 56032/70 Heading H3T A multistage transistor amplifier formed by a plurality of amplifier stages connected in series has in each stage a first group of transistors e.g. D 8 , D 9 having their collector base electrodes connected together to an input terminal and a second group of transistors Q 23 -Q 26 having their base electrodes connected to the input terminal, the transistors D 8 , D 9 and Q 28 -Q 26 of the two groups being of the same conductivity type and having their emitters connected to a common output terminal, the collectors of transistors Q 23 -Q 26 being available for connection to appropriate supply voltages. Owing to the matching of base emitter characteristics, the current flowing through each of the transistors will be nearly identical. Further diode connected transistors D 10 -D 13 are placed in the collector paths of Q 28 -Q 26 so that their collector base voltages will be nearly zero. A load 36 may be connected to selected combinations of the collector currents. The arrangement of Fig. 6 includes a differential amplifier stage 1, a multistage amplifier 12, a push-pull output stage 25 and a bias current source 40. The bias current source 40 comprises amplifying stages 41, 42, 43, the collector currents of the transistors involved being suitably combined to supply bias currents for the other stages 1, 12 and 25. Fig. 4 (not shown) indicates a 4-stage amplifier involving opposite conductivity types of transistors. Fig. 5a (not shown) indicates a multi-stage amplifier suitable for supplying different currents to separate loads.
