    Abstract: This invention relates to a vibrating probe for measuring electrostatic surface potential. A multilayered piezoceramic bender element assembly is provided with a multilayered shield (30, 32) surrounding the bender assembly on all sides except for one opening window. The conductive sense element (22a) of the bender assembly is located in the window and is positioned near the surface (100) to be measured. The bender assembly includes a conductive layer sandwiched between a drive piezoceramic layer (20) and a feedback piezoceramic layer (26). The feedback piezoceramic layer is coated (on the side opposite to the inner conductive layer) with the conductive sense element (22a) and with a separate conductive area for connection to a drive oscillator. The multilayered shield is comprised of inner (32) and outer (30) conductive layers sandwiching an insulator. A circuit is provided whereby the sensed signal floats on a high voltage signal applied to the conductive layers of the shield. A drive oscillator (14) also floats on the high voltage signal and is connected to the drive element (20).

    Abstract: A copier includes a conductive drum support 1 carrying a photoconductor 2. A portion of the drum, either seal 3 or, if a fixed photoconductor layer is used, an uncovered section, presents a conductive outer surface at a fixed reference potential, for example earth. A capacitive probe 6 senses the charge on a portion of the photoconductor adjoining the conductive outer surface and provides a signal indicating that charge relative to the fixed reference potential. Circuits 7 and 11 are responsive to the outputs of the probe to control a charging device 15, an illumination station 4 and a biassed magnetic roller 8 in a developer station.
