    Abstract: A copier includes a conductive drum support 1 carrying a photoconductor 2. A portion of the drum, either seal 3 or, if a fixed photoconductor layer is used, an uncovered section, presents a conductive outer surface at a fixed reference potential, for example earth. A capacitive probe 6 senses the charge on a portion of the photoconductor adjoining the conductive outer surface and provides a signal indicating that charge relative to the fixed reference potential. Circuits 7 and 11 are responsive to the outputs of the probe to control a charging device 15, an illumination station 4 and a biassed magnetic roller 8 in a developer station.

    Abstract: An electrically powered machine (12) is coupled to a power source (11) via a safety relay (101). The machine includes a motor (14) energised through a switch (15) and coupled to an emitter device (16, 17) which generates pulses upon rotation of the motor. A control system (10, 102, 103) controls operation of the switches and is responsive to pulses from the emitter device. To test whether the relay and switch are actually under control of the control system, the output register thereof registers, in the appropriate bit positions (M and R) bits to open the relay and switch in sequence. If emitter pulses are received when either of the relay or switch should be open, then an inhibit signal inhibits operation of the machine.

    Abstract: A xerographic copier includes a control system including a central processor (201). Outputs (207 to 211) of the processor are applied, during start up of the machine, to generate a stepped grey scale on the photoconductor. This grey scale is sensed by a patch sensor system (106) to develop a series of stored signals in the processor corresponding to levels in the grey scale. These signals are employed for subsequent density control.

    Abstract: During each copier warm-up period, a micro processor 40, D/A 41 and network 53 apply a signal of decreasing steps to a comparator 52, which also receives an input from a fuser temperature sensor 50. When the sensor signal exceeds the step signal, the control logic for the copier is enabled since the fuser temperature profile is set at an adequate level for proper fusing.

    Abstract: Electrical components in an elongated array are suspended within the interior of a sleeve type closed loop member such as a rotatable photoconductor drum or closed loop belt of a compact copier. Preferably some of the components are mounted on a board and held within the sleeve by edge slots or the like in sleeve mounting end caps, attached to the machine frame. A drive motor can be attached as part of the array and further can be arranged to drive a fan blade so that cooling air is forced through the sleeve and over the components so that the sleeve acts as a plenum. Power can be coupled from the drive motor through the end mounts to motivate the sleeve in the direction of its closed loop and/or apply power to other components of the copier.
