    Abstract: A system is provided for the simultaneous transmission of pictures between a plurality of scanning stations and a plurality of corresponding receiver stations. The pictures to be transmitted comprise two levels of brightness such as, for example, a document having black print on a white background. Each of the scanning stations scans, in a pseudorandom fashion, its respective picture to provide an output signal indicative of the information on one of the levels of brightness, as for example, the black print information on the document. This information output signal is then multiplexed. A coder and multiplexer upon receiving an information signal, during a given time interval, from one of the scanning stations generate an address signal corresponding to the address of the station providing the information signal whereupon the address signal is transmitted to a decoder at the receiving end for decoding and providing an information signal to the appropriate receiver. When the coder and multiplexer simultaneously receive information signals from two scanning stations within a given time interval a priority control circuit selects one of the signals.

    Abstract: A multiplexer for use in a transmission system is provided with a priority switch with n inputs and n outputs. When a signal is present on only one of the inputs, the switch acts to connect the signal to its associated output. When a signal is present on more than one input at a given time, the priority switch acts to select for connection only one of the signals to its associated output, the selection process being achieved in a pseudorandom manner.

    Abstract: 1357150 T.D.M. exchange systems; data transmission INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 16 Sept 1971 [30 Sept 1970] 43157/71 Headings H4K and H4P In a system for channel switching between a plurality of incoming and a plurality of outgoing T.D.M. highways, two time slots of each frame on each highway are used jointly to provide a single channel reserved for signalling (dialling &c.) and data transmission, one time slot of each pair being used for signals or data the other being used to transmit an associated subscriber address. The system shown switches between incoming and outgoing P.C.M. highways 25 and 27. The highways may be loops (Fig. 1, not shown) on which subscriber station 11a to 11c and T are located. The stations may include speech telegraph and video equipment. The incoming highways 25 are scanned by a scanner 29 (described below) to produce a succession of P.C.M. codes in parallel form on output 53 to AND gate groups 59, 81 and 71 and for each code a corresponding highway time slot number on an output 55 to a decoder 57. If the decode recognizes that this is the first time slot of that highway frame it enables via P1 AND gate group 71 to feed the code from that time slot into an intermediate store 75 where it is held until that highway is due to be scanned again. The code used in the first time slot includes an address of the calling station, a flag bit indicating whether the code in the other time slot of the pair is a signalling code or data for onward transmission and a parity bit. When an incoming highway is scanned a second time the decoder 57 recognizes that the second time slot is being scanned and enables via P2 AND gate group 81 to gate the code in that time slot on to bus 83. At this time the code taken from time slot 1 of that incoming highway appears at the output of store 75 and depending on whether the signalling bit is a "1" or a "0" AND gate groups 89 and 91 or an AND gate group 103 is enabled. In the former ease the calling subscriber address and the signalling code (e.g. dial signal code) are transferred to registers 93 and 95 for interpretation by the exchange control unit 101 while in the latter case the calling subscriber address from store 75 is used to address a store 107 to obtain the address of the called subscriber, this being used to gate itself and the data code on bus 83 into queueing stores such as 121a and 121b associated with the outgoing highway.

    Abstract: A decentralized time division multiplex communication system having independent exchange modules arranged to individually set up connections without the need of central control. Commonality of hardware is limited to a simple interconnection unit, and a clock allowing synchronization of all modules. Each exchange module, with its associated group of terminals, is arranged to form a time division multiplex system of first order. The exchange modules, together with the interconnection unit, are arranged to form a super-multiplex system, i.e., a time division multiplex system of second order. All bus line time division multiplex channels of all exchange modules are interspersed on the interconnection unit. To each of these bus line channels, a time slot is permanently assigned in the super-multiplex time frame.

    Abstract: METHOD AND MEANS FOR DEMAND ACCESSING AND BROADCAST TRANSMISSION AMONG PORTS IN A DISTRIBUTED STAR NETWORK A demand access broadcast transmission method and means capable of supporting random port access and any-to-any transmission at very high data rates. A communication medium formed from an inverted tree network of nodes and full duplex connecting links permits the establishment of a path lock up-link through the network from a demanding port to a root node on a first-come first-serve demand access basis with arbitration at each distinct tree node level. Broadcast transmission is perfected down-link over all fan-out paths from the root node. Collision is avoided by locking a path to a port and by limiting race conditions among active ports to only the leading edges of messages. Thus, relinquishment of a broadcast channel overlapped with retransmission of a message does not result in path seizure since the occurrence of message leading edges is the singular path connection invoking event.
