    Abstract: Method for connecting optical fibers comprising the steps of molding a first plug onto a first fiber end and a second plug onto a second fiber end, said plugs having three mutually intersecting flat surfaces, one of which is perpendicular to the other two, while a fiber end is positioned against the corner in an orientation such that the end of the fiber butts against said one corner surface and the side surface of the fiber tangentially touches said other two corner surfaces and aligning two such plugs (44, 46), each carrying a fiber end, with each other in an alignment frame (76) having two flat alignment surfaces (22, 24) which are oriented with respect to each other at the same orientation as the two corner surfaces which tangentially touch the fiber side surface. Since these orientations are th the same, the plugs fit precisely into the groove formed by the two flat alignment surfaces of the frame and can be moved toward each other until they touch. In this position the fiber ends carried by the castings are butt aligned.

    Abstract: An array of collimated wise aperture electrically pumped leaky corrugated AlGaAs optical waveguide lasers is formed on a single chip by etching a series of grooves oriented with respect to the crystalographic planes to isolate discrete lasers in the array and provide the requisite orientation of the internal reflecting surfaces to support the lasing action. The corrugation period is chosen such that the laser radiation exits from the array in a direction normal to the plane of waveguide.

    Abstract: A user interface includes a process model unit (34) for predicting one or more allowable next states, from a current state of a process, and a display processing unit (26) for deriving, for each of the allowable next states, a representation of the allowable next state. The display processing unit has an output coupled to a display screen (30) for displaying each of the representations (30b-30g) in conjunction with a representation (30a) of a current state of the process. The user interface further includes an actuator control unit (22) that is coupled to an input mechanism whereby a user selects one of the displayed representations of one of the allowable next states. The motor control unit controls the process to cause it to enter a new current state that corresponds to the selected derived representation. In one embodiment, the display screen has a touchscreen capability whereby the user selects one of the representations by physically touching the display screen within an area associated with a selected one of the derived allowable states.

    Abstract: A device providing pointing device functions in a keyboard (11) without requiring the keyboard operator to remove any fingertip from the keys. A computer keyboard key switch mounting plate (10) is supported for horizontal displacement against a resistive force. A transducer (27) for measuring the force exerted in the plane of the keyboard key tops (16) is attached between the keyboard case (8) and the key switch mounting plate (10). The direction and magnitude of the force can be measured and encoded so they may be used to emulate the signals generated by a pointing device. The operator may elect a pointing device mode by merely applying sufficient force along the plane of the surface of the key tops, thus switching from a keyboard mode to a pointing device mode, without moving the fingers from a typing position.

The first is that a regular convex surface contacts any other surface possessing a larger (or a relative negative) radius of curvature at a single point. The second principle is that rigid bodies may be translated (within limits) without changing their size or shape. The third is that given a plane with a constant radius of curvature, three points which can contact its surface will uniquely determine its position. Within the physical environment and subject to the forces which typically act on stylus switches, machined, solid metal components can be made to be a better than first-order approximation to ideal geometric objects.
