    Abstract: A high resolution line scanner for converting optical images into electrical signals by a means of photoconductor switches and strain induced resistor sensing. The line scanner includes (1) a plurality of parallel magnetoresistive stripes spaced apart on a low acoustic loss substrate, e.g., fused quartz, glass, etc., (2) a layer of photoconductive material having a time constant less than the time needed to read a line on a moving page covering one end of the magnetoresistive stripes and (3) a transparent electrode covering the photoconductor material and electrically connected to a power source. A scanning acoustic pulse is propagated in the substrate under the magnetoresistive stripes and induces an output by altering the resistivity of the magnetoresistive stripes when the photoconductive layer selectively connects the power source to the magnetoresistive stripes in accordance with an optical image impressed upon the layer.

    Abstract: Method for connecting optical fibers comprising the steps of molding a first plug onto a first fiber end and a second plug onto a second fiber end, said plugs having three mutually intersecting flat surfaces, one of which is perpendicular to the other two, while a fiber end is positioned against the corner in an orientation such that the end of the fiber butts against said one corner surface and the side surface of the fiber tangentially touches said other two corner surfaces and aligning two such plugs (44, 46), each carrying a fiber end, with each other in an alignment frame (76) having two flat alignment surfaces (22, 24) which are oriented with respect to each other at the same orientation as the two corner surfaces which tangentially touch the fiber side surface. Since these orientations are th the same, the plugs fit precisely into the groove formed by the two flat alignment surfaces of the frame and can be moved toward each other until they touch. In this position the fiber ends carried by the castings are butt aligned.

    Abstract: An optical assembly structure wherein miniature optical components such as lasers, modulators, lenses, thin-film and fiber-optic waveguides, and photodetectors are critically aligned and supported for coactive operation by means of two or more wafers which are formed with complementary grooves and mortises to support the loose optical components such as lenses and fiber-optic waveguides and to receive alignment rails to insure the relativity of the wafers, which also have formed integral therewith optical elements such as waveguides, modulators, and lasers, to produce an integrated optical assembly somewhat in the manner of an "optical bench," wherein the bench structure also provides an active optical element.
