Abstract: PURPOSE: To image a magnetic resonance effect with high resolution by modulating the magnetic moment of a material along the direction of polarization field at a frequency substantially lower than the resonance frequency of spin and oscillating an oscillator at a low frequency, thereby using a cantilever having a low resonance frequency. CONSTITUTION: A sample 20 is polarized in the Z-direction by means of an electromagnet 22 and a magnetic chip 24 on a cantilever 26. Field from the electromagnet 22 is controlled by means of a ramp signal generator 28 and a modulation signal generator 30. More specifically, the generator 28 sets the entire magnetization Mz at a specified level and the generator 30 periodically modulates a polarization field Hz. An RF signal generator 36 drives a high frequency coil 40 to excite a spin in the sample 20. High-frequency excitation of the spin is combined with the modulation of the polarization field Hz to cause periodic magnetization of the sample 20 in the direction Z of the polarization field. Ir is combined with the magnetic gradient of the chip 24 on the cantilever 26 to oscillate the cantilever 26. An oscillation signal is outputted from a line, 46 and the image of spin density of the sample 20 is obtained.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To enable a device utilizing a scanning tunneling microscopy(STM) technique by changing the electronic nature of a thin-film material in order to write data, sensing the change in the nature of a tunneling current in order to read data and changing the nature of the thin-film material in order to erase the data. CONSTITUTION: A film 12 is normally in a crystalline state 12a and the data is not written. A voltage source 14 applies a pulse W of a high level of a short period on a chip 11 of a probe to generate the tunneling electron current in this chip in order to write the data bit 12b. This current melts the independent region 12b of the film 12 by generating electric resistance heat, thereby changing the crystalline state to an amorphous state. The heat dissipating characteristic of the film 12 and a base body 13 has such characteristic that the film does not restore the original state when the film is rapidly cooled. As a result, the STM technique to change the nature of the medium is obtd.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To encode and decode a rate 2/5 (2, 18, 2) code which is especially suitable for the use in a resonance coil overwriting method related to magneto- optical recording. CONSTITUTION: Serial binary input data is converted into serial binary code data meeting (2, 18, 2) restrictions and is re-converted to serial binary input data by a decoder 16. An encoder 11 successively receives two input bits and a 5-bit state vector obtained from the just preceding encoding operation and generates a 5-bit code word and a new 5-bit state vector, based on these two input bits and 5-bit state vector. The decoder 16 converts binary code data into a 5-bit code word and successively converts each bit word code to a re- assigned 3-bit code word expression and collects a set of four adjacent 2-bit code word expressions. Each re-assigned code word expression is converted into a 2-bit output corresponding to the current set of four 3-bit code expressions, and continuous 2-bit outputs are re-converted to serial binary data.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To minimize the sensitivity of a position detector to polarized light and to thermal response of an optical fiber component by providing an optical directional coupler provided with a plural of external boards. CONSTITUTION: The light from a diode laser 13 having a short coherence length is made incident to a port (a). A directional coupler 10 works as a beam splitter which directs part of the incident light to a member (cantilever) 14 through a second port (b) and a single mode optical fiber 11. Part of the light is returned to the fiber 11 by simultaneously reflecting the part at the member 14 and the adjacent split end of the fiber 11 and optically coupled with a photodetector 15 through a third port (c) so that the photodetector 15 can output a signal indicating the position of the member 14 with its amplitude based on the relative phase of the simultaneous reflection. The other part of the incident light is transmitted to another photodetector 18 from the coupler 10 through a fourth port (d). The two signals are outputted through a subtracting circuit 21 and a dividing circuit by minimizing the fluctuation of the laser intensity.
