    Abstract: PURPOSE: To narrow the space between a head and a disk by making the surface area of two front air bearing pads of a slider larger than that of rear air bearing pad. CONSTITUTION: A midsection 28 of a slider of a converter assembly is a recessed surface and forms a non-air bearing surface. Sandwiching this midsection 28, two front air bearing pads 25 and 27 and a rear air bearing pad 29 are formed, and the area of the front air bearing surfaces is made larger than that of the rear air bearing surface. Therefore, as a slider is pitched up by the pads 25 and 27, the pad 29 also pitches up the slider, and air is made to flow under the pad 29 to form the air bearing. As a result, an air gap between a head and a disk with a lubricant film becomes narrow, and a slider of a converter assembly becomes resistant to influence by manufacturing parameter or variations in a disk diameter.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide the liquid bearing type data recording disk file which minimizes the stiction and has the improved head/disk boundary surface that minimizes the consumption of the lubricant from a disk. CONSTITUTION: The improved head/disk boundary surface is provided by a converter carrier 100 which has a new characteristic. The carrier 100 supports a conventional type head 109. The carrier 100 has an air bearing surface located at the front edge, a ski pad 118 located at the rear edge and plural ski legs or struts 120 and 122 which separate air bearing surface rails 110 and 112 from a disk liquid coated film and support while the disk file is not operated. When an operating speed is reached, the air bearing brings up and separates the disk from a struts and the rear section ski pad becomes the only ski leg on a liquid coated film. A projected front edge 124 of the rear section ski pad is wider than a rear edge 130.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To erase the data without damaging a storage surface by selectively sticking molecules to the flat storage surface. CONSTITUTION: A composite leaf spring assembly 13 is a rectangular composite linear spring consisting of main, sub-platforms (P) 12, 14 to control coarse one- dimensional movement in the x direction by a suitable power source 21. The atomically flat storage surface 30 that a deviation from absolute flatness such as graphite, etc., doesn't exceed 25% of the height of the molecule of material stuck to the surface is provided on a suitable substrate. This substrate is attached to an xyz drive 31. The drive 31 is attached to the P 32. When a voltage pulse is applied to a selected probe chip 11, the molecules are stuck from the fruid containing the molecules in contact with the surface to the surface 30 removably. The power source 36 imparts drive force controlling the coarse one-dimensional movement in the y direction to the P 32. The surface 30 can perform large relative movement for the chip 11 by the assembly 13 and a leaf spring assembly 32a. By such a manner, the data are erased without damaging the storage surface.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To join a lubricating film onto the surface of a thin-film recording medium by applying a specified compsn. onto the surface of the recording medium and exposing the coated surface to an electron beam after application of the compsn., thereby joining the compsn. onto the recording medium. CONSTITUTION: A lubricant is applied by spin coating on the surface of a sample 60 consisting of a magnetic memory disk having a carbon base protective layer. The compsn. which is a material selected from a group consisting of hydrocarbon, fluorocarbon and fatty acid is used for the lubricant. A sample 60 coated with the lubricant is supported on a sample holder 70 by arranging the sample within a vacuum chamber 40. This vacuum chamber 40 is evacuated by a vacuum pump 30. A filament power source 10 supplies an electric current to a filament 50. This sample 60 is exposed to the electron beam having energy below about 100 electron volts radiated from the filament 50. As a result, the lubricant applied on the surface of the sample 60 is joined onto the magnetic memory disk.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To improve the resolution of a mask by applying a prescribed voltage pulse to a tunnel probe and changing the electric conductivity of the films on a substrate, thereby forming the mask which does not require the removal of the one film varying in the electric conductivity. CONSTITUTION: The film 10 in an amorphous state consisting of GeTe, etc., is formed on the substrate 11 consisting of Si, etc. The electron radiation probe 12 of a scanning type tunnel microscope is then placed within the prescribed tunnel distance of the film 10 and, thereafter, while the probe is moved in an arrow 14 direction, the prescribed voltage pulses (a), (b), (c) dependent upon the thickness of the film 10 are applied between the probe 12 and the film 10 to locally heat the a', b', c' parts of the film 10 and to crystallize these parts by changing their electric conductivity. As a result, the mask 15 which does not require the removal of the amorphous parts is obtd. The mask 15 is used and the voltage pulses are then applied between the mask and the film 16 on the wafer 17 to chemically change the desired parts of the film 16 or to cause the phase change thereof and, thereafter, the film 16 is patterned by executing peeling or etching.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To enable a device utilizing a scanning tunneling microscopy(STM) technique by changing the electronic nature of a thin-film material in order to write data, sensing the change in the nature of a tunneling current in order to read data and changing the nature of the thin-film material in order to erase the data. CONSTITUTION: A film 12 is normally in a crystalline state 12a and the data is not written. A voltage source 14 applies a pulse W of a high level of a short period on a chip 11 of a probe to generate the tunneling electron current in this chip in order to write the data bit 12b. This current melts the independent region 12b of the film 12 by generating electric resistance heat, thereby changing the crystalline state to an amorphous state. The heat dissipating characteristic of the film 12 and a base body 13 has such characteristic that the film does not restore the original state when the film is rapidly cooled. As a result, the STM technique to change the nature of the medium is obtd.
