    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate practical use of asymmetrical digital subscriber line ADSL by simultaneously transmitting data via a plurality of subscriber lines, extended between a shared device and a plurality of remote devices, and respectively assigning a specific destination code to each remote device in the case of a symbol based discrete multi-tone transmission system. SOLUTION: A plurality of work stations 216 each uses asymmetrical digital subscriber line ADSL (client) modem 214 to connect with each analog front end 212 of a shared ADSL server modem 210 via each twisted pair local loop 218. The shared ADSL modem 210 communicates with a digital interface 200, and the latter provides information to other network or a processor of a digital telephone network and an Internet service provider or the like.

    Abstract: A demodulator mechanism which uses estimates of the in-phase and quadrature-phase components or differential phase modulated carrier signals for performing a coherent demodulation of these signals is described. The instantaneous estimates, obtained from an estimator circuit, are fed into a differential carrier recovery circuit, which provides for a feedback of ideal sine and cosine components, and combined with the instantaneous estimates for incrementally decreasing a phase error signal generated in a computational circuit. By thus incrementally decreasing the phase error signal, an ideal phase angle is eventually obtained, thereby providing for coherent demodulated output components of the input carrier signals.

A number of bits transmitted within each of the frequency bands in the second group of frequency bands for a remote device is selected during a communication handshake between the remote device and the shared device by probing a subscriber line connected to the remote device to determine data rates that can be supported by the subscriber line at each of a plurality of frequency bands.
