    Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for efficiently distributing a plurality of color sample points in a color palette throughout a multi-dimensional color space. A display device is provided for generating rows and columns of picture elements, each picture element having a selected color from the color palette associated therewith. A predetermined number of color points from the color palette are distributed throughout the color space in a hexagonal crystalline structure wherein the maximum distance between any selected color within the color space and the nearest color sample point in the color palette is minimized for a specified number of color sample points. A processor is then utilized to select a color point from within the color palette for each picture element in the display. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, selected sample points in the color palette are located at the boundaries of the color space in order to provide more brilliant colors.

    Abstract: TABLE STRUCTURING AND DECODING A decode table made up of words arranged and encoded on a byte value/frequency of use basis for decoding phrases stored in a table. The words making up the phrases in the phrase table are also encoded with a byte value based on the frequency of use of the words. That is, the most popular words are coded with low byte values represented with a minimum number of bits. The least used words are coded with higher byte values represented with a greater number of bits. As such, storage requirements are significantly decreased. As an example, a three word phrase including two relatively popular words may require only 11 bits made up of 3, 3, and 5 bit words. In the decoding table associated with each word is number of word bits information. This number of bits information is used during decoding for distinguishing the words making up the phrases. The process of decoding a phrase includes comparing the phrase with the words in the decode table. Since the words in the decode table are arranged or ordered by byte value, there is a likelihood of an early compare upon indexing through the decode table. Upon a compare, the number of bits information associated with the word resulting in a compare is used to determine any phrase remainder. If there is a remainder, the remainder is compared with the decode table to obtain a match. The compare/remainder determination sequencing continues until all words in the phrase have been decoded.

    Abstract: RGB components of pairs of adjacent pels of a captured digitized image are averaged. A perceived color palette is constructed, each color being comprised of functionally combined RGB components of two different input palette colors. An array is formed of continuous colors, each indexed to the perceived palette color to which its RGB components are closest and indicating the two input palette colors defining the respective perceived color. RGB components for each averaged pel pair and the array index are then used to locate the perceived color closest thereto and, the two input palette colors corresponding to the perceived color. These two input colors are then substituted in a display for those of the two averaged pels and the process repeated for all averaged pel pairs. In a preferred embodiment, the difference between the perceived and averaged colors is diffused to adjacent averaged pels. An image is thereby readily produced having substantially more perceived colors than those available in the input palette.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed in a data processing system for rapidly resizing color images which are comprised of rows and columns of picture elements, each picture element including multiple color components. A first table is created which includes values which correspond to selected percentages of each permitted magnitude of color component. In an embodiment where each color component is restricted to an equal number of permitted magnitudes only one table will be required. Next, operator inputs which indicate the desired image size are utilized to dynamically create a second table which contains nonrepetitive information which may be utilized to determine what percentages of existing picture elements must be utilized to create new picture elements for the resized image. The percentages from the second table are then utilized to access the values within the first table to determine those values of each color component which must be combined to create each new picture element. After all of the components of each new picture element have been determined, the components are combined and the new picture elements are utilized to display a resized color image. In this manner, it is possible to create a resized color image by utilizing a look-up table and combination scheme rather than utilizing extensive processor assets to dynamically calculate each new picture element in turn.

    Abstract: COMPUTER-BASED, AUDIO/VISUAL CREATION AND PRESENTATION SYSTEM AND METHOD A user/PC interface system is described which enables the creation and performance of a synchronized audio/visual story on the PC. The interface enables the initial storage of a plurality of visual images. Then, it enables the creation of an audio presentation which includes labels and time indications, certain of which are employed for synchronization purposes. The system is responsive to a label to execute a predetermined command upon the appearance of the label in the audio presentation. The PC is then operated to perform the audio presentation, that performance automatically causing the display of visual images upon the occurrence of labels and time indications. An improved, table-based authoring system is also described for preparation of both the above noted audio and visual presentations. The system relies upon columnar presentations of a tabular form, each column indicating a separate control function (or comment) relating to the audio/visual presentation.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed in a data processing system for rapidly and efficiently converting a black and white image comprised of rows and columns of picture elements to a reduced size grayscale image. Each picture element within the black and white image is either black or white. A dynamic determination is made of a specified number of picture elements from the black and white image which correspond to each new picture element within the reduced size grayscale image. Next, a bit counting algorithm is utilized to determine the number of black and white picture elements within each specified number of picture elements of the black and white image. The resultant tally is then utilized to access a table containing various grayscale values and the accessed grayscale value is assigned to an associated new picture element of the reduced size grayscale image. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the determination of the specified number of picture elements from the black and white image which correspond to each new picture element within the reduced size grayscale image is rounded off to the nearest whole number of picture elements.
