Abstract: SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR IMAGE MAPPING IN LINEAR SPACE Red, green and blue pixels of a digitized image are combined to form a single vector that points to three lookup tables translating each pixel to linear Y, I, Q values thereby forming a linear image. The color value of each pixel in the linear image, comprised of Y, I, Q "aim" values, is then sequentially processed to attempt a match to the closest available colors. These three aim values point to respective lookup tables which translate them to three corresponding intermediate numbers which, when summed, point to a larger table mapping them to a number corresponding to the closest color in the predetermined palette. Three lookup tables translate the map number back to the linear space with corresponding mapped Y, I, Q values. The difference between these values and prior aim values constitutes error arising from the finite palette. The error is corrected with opposite error of adjoining pixels by error diffusion techniques. In one embodiment, the error alters the linear Y, I, Q values of yet unmapped pixels prior to their being converted to aim values. The linear image is precalculated so that error-correcting addition or subtraction is made prior to the pixel's conversion. In another embodiment, the value to add or subtract is stored in an array so that it may be added when the pixel is converted.

Abstract: A system and method for electronically developing an image recorded on film by applying a developer to and then scanning the film during the development at a number of spaced timed intervals. Images are captured during each of the spaced scans and are stored as digital representations of that scan. The stored digital representations are combined on a pixel-by-pixel basis to produce an output image that differs from any one of the stored representations. This combination of digital images allows for optimal image development without actually forming or storing the image on the film itself.

Abstract: AT9-89-118 METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR IMPROVING OUTPUT DISPLAY DEVICE RESOLUTUION The present invention achieves an increase in effective resolution of color output display devices, and in the preferred embodiment to liquid crystal display devices. A three component color signal being used to generate a color image in conjunction with a pel pattern is modified to horizontally displace, or delay, a single color component of the color signal by substantially one half pel relative to the remaining color components. Additionally, the pels displaying this image are offset half a pel in the opposite direction to bring the images back into alignment, but with the pel sites horizontally out of alignment. Further, this single component can be vertically offset in a similar manner relative to the remaining color components. The effect of this color component offset is to increase the effective resolution of the output display device, as seen by the eye, without adding significantly to the complexity of the image generating apparatus.

Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for efficiently distributing a plurality of color sample points in a color palette throughout a multi-dimensional color space. A display device is provided for generating rows and columns of picture elements, each picture element having a selected color from the color palette associated therewith. A predetermined number of color points from the color palette are distributed throughout the color space in a hexagonal crystalline structure wherein the maximum distance between any selected color within the color space and the nearest color sample point in the color palette is minimized for a specified number of color sample points. A processor is then utilized to select a color point from within the color palette for each picture element in the display. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, selected sample points in the color palette are located at the boundaries of the color space in order to provide more brilliant colors.

Abstract: A scanning beam display system is used as a projection display and as a reflective flying-spot scanner using a plurality of photoreceptors to sense depth. Used as a display, the projection of a document-size image from overhead onto a work surface such as a printed form provides a naturally oriented, non-invasive display. Beam modulation and contextual subtraction permit the flying-spot function in ambient light. Used as a combination display and scanner, inherent registration of the display and data input functions permit interaction with an operator by displaying on and sensing from any document or work object. A plurality of non-overlapping sensors operate with the flying-spot function to receive images alike in perspective but differing in shadow placement, from which relative distances and object boundaries are easily derived. Used without the display function, a visualization of a work area is obtained that is much more interpretable by a computer than with standard visual parallax for improved robotic visual perception. Acting in concert, the methods of this invention form a touch sensitive image on a work surface devoid of display or sensing hardware.

Abstract: Analog video data input is received by a video display adapter of a digital video capture system. A method is disclosed for retaining most of the resolution of the captured full interlaced image while eliminating the image shake of fast moving components. In a particular embodiment, a first and second sequential field comprising a full frame of video data are captured and digitised (62). These fields are then processed (64,66,68) to determine areas corrupted by fast movement of components of the image which were captured. In the areas of detected fast movement, an estimate for pels is substituted (72) in one field based upon the other field. Resolution loss is thereby confined to small areas which, due to rapid motion, were not well defined prior to processing.

Abstract: RGB components of pairs of adjacent pels of a captured digitized image are averaged. A perceived color palette is constructed, each color being comprised of functionally combined RGB components of two different input palette colors. An array is formed of continuous colors, each indexed to the perceived palette color to which its RGB components are closest and indicating the two input palette colors defining the respective perceived color. RGB components for each averaged pel pair and the array index are then used to locate the perceived color closest thereto and, the two input palette colors corresponding to the perceived color. These two input colors are then substituted in a display for those of the two averaged pels and the process repeated for all averaged pel pairs. In a preferred embodiment, the difference between the perceived and averaged colors is diffused to adjacent averaged pels. An image is thereby readily produced having substantially more perceived colors than those available in the input palette.

Abstract: A method, system and process for improving image enhancement tools through the application of expert systems. The improvements are accomplished by the operation of a process in the memory of a processor that enhances an image based on a set of criteria entered by a user. The image is enhanced in at least two ways and the two enhanced images (510, 520) are presented to the user. The user selects the image that appears best and the selected image (530) is thereafter used for subsequent image enhancements according to the user criteria until a final choice of images (550, 560) is presented.

Abstract: A system and method to compensate for effects of a recording medium such as film on image data retrieved therefrom. Red, green, blue, and infrared light is sequentially transmitted through film having an image exposed therein to the system which captures corresponding images. The infrared image maps the location, boundaries and intensities of the media defects. The map is employed combinatorially with the other captured images resulting in an image from the film free of the effects of the film defects. In one embodiment the effects of the imperfections are divided out from the red, green, blue spectra in an operation dividing out the infrared image data on a pixel-by-pixel basis. In an alternate embodiment wherein the imperfections substantially prevent transmission of IR light therethrough, the IR image map of the defects is nevertheless employed with an automated fill-in algorithm more effectively utilized due to the precision with which the defect boundaries are known.

Abstract: A method for processing signals to diffuse quantization error spatially or temporally. Positive feedback of the quantization error is used to reduce the relative noise for the low frequencies of the spectrum. According to a preferred implementation in a two-dimensional spatial application involving a base pixel and three adjacent orthogonally arranged pixels, error attributable to quantization at the base pixel location is provided as positive feedback for the quantization of the diagonally adjacent pixel. Offsetting and complementary values of the quantization error are also diffused to the remaining two diagonally positioned pixels. The composite of the four pixels forms a square with a zero net error diffusion along the horizontal, vertical and diagonal orientations.
