[Also in Division H1] Information is stored in a magnetic memory element by remanent fluxes having the same orientation but different distributions. Element 10 has a wire W for generating a first magnetic field and a wire B connected to generators 28, 30 for supplying both positive and negative pulses thereto. However, as described, the device is capable of use with pulses of only one polarity to permit a uni-polar output to be produced, as claimed in Specification 1,004,932, and four different read-write cycles for generating unipolar outputs are described each being preceded by a positive clearing pulse on wire W. In the first a " 0 " is written by a positive pulse on wire W and a " 1 " is written by positive pulses on both wires W and B, the B pulse having a smaller amplitude than the W pulse and terminating after it. This causes some of the lines of flux 34 to traverse the magnetic core material above wire B, as at 36 (Fig. 4c, not shown). For read-out a positive pulse of lower energy content, but possibly greater amplitude or duration, than the write pulse is applied to wire W to disturb flux lines 36 and generate an output pulse in wire B when a " 1" is stored, without destroying the information. In the second arrangement the same pulses are applied to wire W but to store a "1 " a negative pulse is applied to wire B. The sense of the output pulse during readout is then reversed. The third arrangement uses a negative pulse on wire W for storing a "0," combined with a positive B pulse for storing a "1." The write pulse on wire W has a lower energy content than the clear pulse. The negative read pulse applied to wire W may have a greater energy content than the write pulse but should not exceed the energy of the clear pulse. The fourth arrangement is similar but uses a negative pulse on wire B for storing a " 1." For producing a bi-polar output a " 0 " and " 1 " are stored using positive and negative pulses on wire B in conjunction with the write pulse. It is stated that element 10 may consist of non-remanent material overlaid with a remanent layer. A magnet matrix store is described.
