Abstract: Provided are a method of processing the data content of Web pages and a software component for cooperating with a Web Browser, the software component controlling the operation of a data processing apparatus on which it runs to perform the following steps in response to user selection of a desired data processing operation and user selection of a portion of a Web page presented via the Browser to a user of the data processing apparatus: extracting from the Web page the selected portion of the markup language Web page content; separating data items from markup tags within the selected portion; passing the separated data items to a data processing component to perform a processing operation on the individual data items; in response to receipt by said software component of a result of said processing operation, generating a modified version of the portion of the markup language Web page content; and providing said modified portion to the Browser to replace the extracted portion of the presented Web page. The data processing components include components for performing semantic processing operations on individual data items extracted from a Web page.

The method includes creating one or more items of user interface element ancillary information; receiving a request for user interface clement ancillary information, the request identifying the context (e.g. an ID for the interface element) in which the information is to be used; searching the one or more items of user interface element ancillary information for items matching the context in which the information is to be used; and returning one or more items of user interface element ancillary information matching the context in which the information is to be used. Crowd sourcing may be used to create ancillary information and external search services may also be used.

Abstract: An image map Java Bean or ActiveX control has a display image property and a mapping image property. The mapping image comprises a plurality of regions coloured from a pre-determined sequence of colours. When instantiated the image map displays the display image. The image map is, responsive to user interaction with the display image, to obtain a coordinate in the display image and to reading an index colour of a corresponding coordinate in the mapping image. If the index colour is from the pre-determined sequence of colours, the image map indicates user selection of a region of the display image by highlighting the region.
