Abstract: A light scanning system of controlled spot motion variation perpendicular to the direction of scan utilizing a rotating mirror and two cylindrical or toroidal lenses positioned relative to the rotating mirror to allow increased nominal axis of rotation to facet angular tolerances while maintaining a distinct non-overlapping line scan. Specifically, for one application the axis of rotation of the mirror is orthogonal to the plane formed by the incoming and reflected beam from the mirror. The first cylindrical or toroidal lens, which has little or no power in the scan plane, focuses the incoming beam in the azimuth perpendicular to the scan onto the mirror while the second cylindrical lens acts as a beam configurer to configure the beam to substantially collimated shape while directing it towards a spherical lens for focusing onto an image plane.

Abstract: 1481654 Scanning systems INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 23 May 1975 [11 July 1974] 22926/75 Heading G2J [Also in Division G4] A scanning arrangement uses a mirror tunnel 30 to redirect a scanned beam into a crossed scanning pattern at 35. In one embodiment the beam is scanned into one end of the tunnel 30 by a rotating polygon 26; and the light reflected from a bar coded object at 35 (not shown) is detected by a photo-cell at 38. Alternatively the object at (35) could be illuminated by lamps at the other end of the tunnel 30, and the photo-cell scanned on to the object via the tunnel. If the facets of polygon 26 are at various different angles to the polygon axis, the respective criss-crossed scans at 35 will be displaced relative to each other so as to give interlaced scanning patterns. The effect of ambient light may be reduced by using a laser in conjunction with a narrow pass filter, or by arranging the detector to be scanned simultaneously with the illuminating beam via a beam-splitter between source 20 and polygon 26.

Abstract: IMPACT POSITION TRANSDUCER FOR INK JET A sensing arrangement for accurately detecting the position of ink jet or similar drop impact thereon. The drop impact occurs on the surface of a poled piezoelectric between two parallel conductors. The charge generated by drop impact is localized, the degree inversely dependent upon the piezoelectric thickness, so that the signal generated in a conductor is dependent upon the distance of the impact location from the conductor. Thus, using transimpedance amplifiers, the difference of the output signals indicates the impact position.
