    Abstract: A method and apparatus is disclosed for automatically threading web material, e.g., magnetic tape, from a replacable supply reel to a non-replacable take-up reel of a web transport device, e.g., a reel-to-reel type magnetic tape drive, in which the web path is nonlinear and relatively complex as a result of various components, e.g., magnetic transducer tape guides, which act on the web while it is being transported. The apparatus comprises a coupling device and a mechanism for moving and guiding the coupling device between the supply reel and the take-up reel. The coupling device couples to a leader block attached to the tape at the supply reel. The mechanism moves and guides the coupling device to thread the tape over the predefined tape path and positions the leader block wholly within a radially disposed slot in the hub of the take-up reel. The coupling device remains attached to the moving mechanism and coupled to the leader block when the leader block is rotated with the take-up reel. The method is characterized by the steps of maintaining the relationship of the coupling device to the leader block and to the moving and guiding means during rotation of the take-up reel when the leader block is positioned in the radially disposed slot of the take-up reel.

    Abstract: 1481654 Scanning systems INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 23 May 1975 [11 July 1974] 22926/75 Heading G2J [Also in Division G4] A scanning arrangement uses a mirror tunnel 30 to redirect a scanned beam into a crossed scanning pattern at 35. In one embodiment the beam is scanned into one end of the tunnel 30 by a rotating polygon 26; and the light reflected from a bar coded object at 35 (not shown) is detected by a photo-cell at 38. Alternatively the object at (35) could be illuminated by lamps at the other end of the tunnel 30, and the photo-cell scanned on to the object via the tunnel. If the facets of polygon 26 are at various different angles to the polygon axis, the respective criss-crossed scans at 35 will be displaced relative to each other so as to give interlaced scanning patterns. The effect of ambient light may be reduced by using a laser in conjunction with a narrow pass filter, or by arranging the detector to be scanned simultaneously with the illuminating beam via a beam-splitter between source 20 and polygon 26.

    Abstract: The recognition of human and machine readable characters of a family of type of which each character comprises one or more constrained segments is enhanced by a single element shutter and light conducting and optical image rotating component in an opto-mechanical subassembly for precisely scanning short straight line segments in seriatim. The movable shutter is arranged with apertures in two parallel tracks moving past the field of scan and preferably the apertures are arranged for scanning a multiple of characters for each full movement of the shutter. The apertures for each character are divided into slits and slots with a slit in one track cooperating by way of the image rotating component with a slot in the other track moving in the direction of an image line segment under consideration. Drum, belt and disk shutters are contemplated, and plural image rotating elements and associated sets of aperture tracks are feasible with optical fiber bundles. A moving mirror illuminating and scanning system is also disclosed. Opto-electronic circuitry produces electric representations in response to the presence and absence of character line segments in the image. The basic opto-electronic circuitry comprises a photosensitive diode arranged to receive light from the scanning field of a document and suitable logical circuitry.

    Abstract: An elongated optical fiber bundle used in a manual scanning system having a high intensity light source is protected from the adverse effects of the high temperature involved by the optical system disclosed. The proximal end of the fiber bundle is illuminated by light from a source and associated elliptical reflector brought to a focus at the face of the bundle. An annular heat and flare shield is interposed between the light source and the bundle with the aperture about the end of the bundle, preferably the aperture of the shield has a conical wall slightly beyond a conical annulus of the light beam. This annular light configuration is brought about by the imposition of a mirror having a central aperture between the light source and the bundle for permitting light from the bundle to pass directly to a photosensitive device. Heat from light energy passing through the aperture without reflection to the bundle for illumination thereof is dissipated by a heat radiator positioned beyond the mirror aperture. The efficiency of heat radiation is maximized by locating the heat radiator at the focal point of the light energy passing through the mirror aperture.
