Abstract: A PLANE MIRROR ILLUMINATION SYSTEM FOR ILLUMINATING A DOCUMENT PLANE OF A DOCUMENT COPYING MACHINE IN SUCH A MANNER THAT THE LIGHT INTENSITY AT ANY POINT OF THE DOCUMENT PLANE VARIES INVERSELY TO THE RELATIONSHIP KNOWN AS THE COSINE FOURTH POWER LAW. THIS COMPENSATES FOR THE ATTENUATION OF LIGHT BY THE FOCUSING LENS ACCORDING TO THE COSINE FOURTH POWER LAW AND PROVIDES A UNIFORM ILLUMINATION LEVEL ON THE IMAGE PLANE.

Abstract: A magnetic card transport which includes three drive rollers. A forward drive roller for driving the magnetic card toward the entry throat for recording character by character and for ejecting the card from the transport; a reverse drive roller for positioning the card in an opposite direction for read checking a previously recorded character; and a high speed reverse drive roller for positioning the card at the beginning of a track during initial entry from the throat and from the end of a previously recorded track. The three drive rollers continuously rotate beneath the card and the card is caused to move by application of a pinch roller to the card to press it into rolling contact with its associated drive roller. A fixed guide rail is provided and the card is biased against the fixed guide rail by means of guide springs. Further, to prevent misalignment of the card during reading and writing the pinch rollers associated with the forward and reverse drive rollers are canted such that the resultant moments of force are in a direction to bias the card against the fixed drive rail. The entry/exit throat of the card transport, the drive rollers and the magnetic head are located such that optimum utilization of the recording area on the card is accomplished. In addition, a dual card switch located near the innermost extremity of the card bed is positioned such that it is not contracted during normal movement of the card, but in the event an operator attempts to insert another card and thereby force the original card further into the machine and out from under the pinch rollers, the switch is operative to signal the logic that an eject cycle must be entered into and the mechanical spring of the switch causes the card which tripped the switch to be flipped back into engagement with the drive rollers such that that card is also ejected.

Abstract: APPARATUS FOR RECORDING INFORMATION ON A RECORDING SURFACE The start of each cycle of a pump, which supplies a pressurized ink stream through a nozzle for application to a recording surface on a rotary drum, is synchronized with each revolution of the drum. If more than one cycle of the pump occurs during each revolution of the drum, the number of the cycles in each drum revolution must be an integer with each cycle starting an equal angle of the revolution of the drum from the start of the prior cycle.

Abstract: An ink jet printing apparatus is described having facilities for printing information in character locations, (boxes) each character location comprising a plurality of vertical columns of drop locations, and a number of characters comprising a line of information. Structures and circuits are included for insuring correct location of information within the character boxes and also providing for one mode in which characters are printed continuously line-by-line and another mode in which characters are printed incrementally character-by-character. During incremental printing, as well as the first character in a line or group of characters, provision is made for re-bounding the printhead back into the box of the character just printed, that is, prior to the next character box to be printed to insure that when the printhead starts up again for the next character that all drop components for that character, including any located in the immediate vicinity of the character boundary, are properly placed during printing.

Abstract: FACSIMILE MID-PAGE RESTART The method and apparatus shown herein provide for restarting a facsimile operation after a mid-page interrupt without overlapping or splitting the image. Furthermore, this is accomplished in a facsimile system that does not have a one-to-one synchronous relationship between synchronized mechanisms in the system. In operation, a print carriage is synchronized to a false once-around signal related to the motion of a print drum. There is a predetermined cyclic relationship between the false oncearound and the real once-around for the drum. If a mid-page interrupt occurs, the line position at the time of interrupt is remembered, and the particular relationship existing between the false once-around and the real once-around at the time of interrupt is remembered. The carriage is backed up to a point prior to the mid-page interrupt and rests until restart. Upon restart, the carriage is accelerated up to speed and resynchronized to the false oncearound before it reaches the point of interrupt. The once-around to which the carriage is resynchronized has the same relationship to the real oncearound as stored at the time of interrupt. When the carriage reaches the interrupt point, that position is detected, and the facsimile system resumes printing on the next line without splitting or overlapping the image.
