Abstract: MULTIPLE SPEED INK JET PRINTER Disclosed is a multi speed ink jet printer in which alternate vertical scans of the ink stream may be omitted or alternate dots horizontally may be omitted or a combination of the two. In the alternate vertical scan omit mode, a factor of two increase in the speed of printing may be obtained, the same being true of a horizontal row dot omission. Moreover, a combination of the two permits up to a four times speed increase. In essence, while the rate of the ink stream remains constant, the predetermined maximum number of dots (picture elements) in a character box is decreased (resolution decreased) to permit an increase in the speed of printing.

Abstract: An interactive ink jet printer prints characters of a language from left to right or right to left in accordance with the direction in which the language is normally written. The signals for the direction in which a motor, which moves ink droplet supply means relative to a recording medium, the signals from a grating, which indicates the direction of motion of the ink droplet supply means and its position relative to a reference position, and the signal for the location of the ink droplet supply means at the reference position are changed whenever the direction of character printing is to be reversed.

Abstract: An ink jet printing apparatus is described having facilities for printing information in character locations, (boxes) each character location comprising a plurality of vertical columns of drop locations, and a number of characters comprising a line of information. Structures and circuits are included for insuring correct location of information within the character boxes and also providing for one mode in which characters are printed continuously line-by-line and another mode in which characters are printed incrementally character-by-character. During incremental printing, as well as the first character in a line or group of characters, provision is made for re-bounding the printhead back into the box of the character just printed, that is, prior to the next character box to be printed to insure that when the printhead starts up again for the next character that all drop components for that character, including any located in the immediate vicinity of the character boundary, are properly placed during printing.

Abstract: 1405197 Ink drop printers INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 14 May 1973 [27 June 1972] 22760/73 Heading G4H An ink-drop printer 1-30 comprises means 37-57 for detecting failure in synchronisation between drop charging and drop formation. Test signals 41-43, 81 or 65 (ramp or pulse signals, Fig. 3, not shown) are applied to the charge electrode 18 so as to cause otherwise uncharged drops to be deflected into a gutter 35 or 36; the synchronization may be effected line-by-line (e.g. in the home position for each line), between characters or within the matrix boundaries of individual characters. Each gutter contains a sensor which translates charge into current level; the use of gutter 35 produces current levels smaller than those normally encountered during printing, whereas the levels obtainable from gutter 36 are higher since a greater potential is required to deflect the drops thereto (this can also detect lack of potential 25 on deflecting plate 22). The resulting signal A or B is changed to a voltage level and fed with a reference 55 to a comparator 57, the resulting difference signal being used to adjust the timing of drop separation in a piezo-electric crystal driver 15 relative to the signals applied to charge electrode 18. Another embodiment similar to that of Fig. 1 is described with reference to Fig 2 (not shown). Co-pending Application No. 41107/73 describes a similar system for a plurality of ink streams.

Abstract: A METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR AUTOMATICALLY CONTROLLING THE INCLINATION OF PATTERNS IN INK JET PRINTERS An ink jet printer in which the nozzle for emitting a stream of ink drops, the charge electrode for charging ink drops in accordance with signals to be recorded, and the deflection electrodes for providing an electric field therebetween to deflect ink drops in accordance with the magnitude of the charges on the drops, are mounted on a carrier which moves relative to an ink drop record receiving media for forming images indicative of the signals on the deflected ink drops. To compensate for the inclination of the image formed by the carrier movement relative to the recording media, a voltage gradient or difference is applied across at least one of the deflection electrodes so as to effect electric field distortion intermediate the electrodes to thereby compensate for the slant due to carrier motion. The amount of distortion is controlled by monitoring the carrier velocity and automatically feeding back a signal to the distortion creating voltage difference to control the voltage difference dependent upon carrier velocity.
