    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To presume that a catastrophic fault may occur shortly in the combination of a slider and a disk by analyzing reading errors which occur in the track band which is most influenced by loading/unloading operations. SOLUTION: A test pattern is read during a fixed number N of rotations and the number of soft errors per track(SFPT), namely, SFPT=SO/N is calculated. The SFPT is measured at every head (j) and called SEPT (j). The degree of deterioration is found from a normalized difference as understood from the formula. While a slider is in contact with a disk the potentials for the breakage of the disk and the performance deterioration of an air bearing can be decided by only measuring the SFR which is the half width of the slider, because both of an outside rail and an inside rail come into contact with the disk. Therefore, it can be presumed that a catastrophic fault may occur shortly in the combination of the slider and disk.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To reduce the asymmetry and the distortion of output signals from a magnetic resistance sensor. CONSTITUTION: An electric signal v(t) outputted from the magnetic resistance sensor 200 is detected. A signal ei (m) obtained by digitizing the electric signal in a sampler 212 is digitally made into a line. The electric signal v(t) is amplified and it is made into the signal ei (t). It is sampled in the sampler 212 and the digital output signal ei (m) is obtained. A multiplier 216 multiples a linear coefficient Ki (m) by the digital output signal ei (m) and the digital output signal ei (m) is changed by the linear coefficient Ki (m). Thus, a linear digital output signal fi (m) is obtained.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To extract low noise digital data by sampling an analog read-back signal from a head by means of an over-samplying rate being the integral multiple of data transmission speed. CONSTITUTION: The analog read-back signal received by a transducer 39 is sampled by an analog/digital converter 204 having the sampling rate N/To being the integral multiple of data transmissioin speed so as to generate first signal sequence. The signal sequence is filtered by a band-pass filter 205 having a linear phase/frequency characteristic so that the phase specification of the sequence of the signal is preserved. Then, first signal sequency is sampled by the rate 1/To being slower than the above sampling rate so as to generate second signal sequence. Then, digital data is extracted from second signal sequence by a digital decoder 208. Thus, low noise digital data is obtained.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the multimedia server system and method which transmit a multimedia program to a remote medium control system. SOLUTION: A program is encoded according to specific compression standards and stored in a storage library in compressed digital format as individual program segments which are sequenced representing the characteristic part of the program. A video parser composes a program segment sequence in custom order of the sequential program segments of the program. The custom order sequence accords with constitution parameters related to the constitution of the medium control system requesting the program and a representation control mechanism. The simultaneous transmission of program segment sequences in plural corresponding customer sequences to plural remote medium control systems is facilitated with an asynchronous transfer mode distribution switch. A program segment sequences is processed by a local medium control system so as to provide the sequential representation of the program segments and also provide a local VCR type control function.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To apply timing for reducing power consumption in relation to the latest history of an access operation to a device by comparing average consumption energy with a previously decided consumption energy threshold and selecting an operation mode. CONSTITUTION: A disk driving device 20 receives power from a power source device 22 through a mode controller 24. The power from the device 22 is transferred to a consumption energy monitor device 28 through a line 26 and is transferred from the device 28 to the controller 24 through a line 30. The controller 24 distributes the power inputted through the line 30 to the device 20 through plural lines represented by a line 32. The device 28 gives the signal 34 of use energy to the consumption energy comparator 36 of fuzzy logic and compares average consumption energy with the consumption energy threshold. The comparator 36 generates a mode selection signal 38 based on the compared result and transfers the signal 38 to the controller 24 for making a necessary power consumption reduction mode. The controller 24 selects the operation mode in response to the signal 38.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a viewer to edit and control video program materials by receiving video program materials formed by giving respective divided segments tags indicating their ratings, and determining whether or not the respective segments are shown to the viewer according to the ratings. SOLUTION: The respective segments in a buffer 304 are given the tags of G or R ratings. When the viewer requests to edit all R scenes, the editing is performed by a frame editing controller 308 and only the G scenes are shown to the viewer on a TV 116. Therefore, the segments given the tags indicating R ratings are edited from the materials and not shown on the TV 116.
