Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To transfer a source program signal to the direct access storage devide by writing a source program segment to plural data storage areas by a controller and reading the source program segment as a sequenced local segment through the adjustment. SOLUTION: A multimedia server 30 sends a video program or another visual or audio expression as a customized compression digital source program segment stream to a subscriber's set-top control system 62 via a communication channel 44 in the on-demand pay-per-view system. A prescribed number of compressed program segments received from the server 30 under the control of the control system 62 is written in a storage area of a large capacity storage library and sequenced local program segments are sequentially read from the storage areas.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the multimedia server system and method which transmit a multimedia program to a remote medium control system. SOLUTION: A program is encoded according to specific compression standards and stored in a storage library in compressed digital format as individual program segments which are sequenced representing the characteristic part of the program. A video parser composes a program segment sequence in custom order of the sequential program segments of the program. The custom order sequence accords with constitution parameters related to the constitution of the medium control system requesting the program and a representation control mechanism. The simultaneous transmission of program segment sequences in plural corresponding customer sequences to plural remote medium control systems is facilitated with an asynchronous transfer mode distribution switch. A program segment sequences is processed by a local medium control system so as to provide the sequential representation of the program segments and also provide a local VCR type control function.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multimedia control system and its method at a minimum cost by writing a source program segment buffered in an input buffer to a data storage disk, reading the segment, sending it to a display device and displaying it on the display device. SOLUTION: A multimedia server 30 sends a video program or another visual or audio expression as a customized compression digital source program segment stream to a subscriber's set-top control system 62 in the on-demand pay-per-view system. The local set-top control unit 62 buffers the compressed program segment and sends it to a television receiver 24 of a subscriber by using a standard home use transmission channel or an infrared ray transceiver pair. Plural subscribers can make simultaneous communication with the server 30 by using the system 62.
