Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method, apparatus and article of manufacture for allocating use of an access device between a host operating system and a guest operating system. SOLUTION: A source of the received request to use the access device is determined as either the host operating system or the guest operating system. A determination of whether the host or guest operating system has a key for the access device is performed. The key enables either the host operating system or the guest operating system to use the access device. A determination of whether the received request is an altering request to change a state of the access device or a passive request to read the access device is also performed.
Abstract:
A method for rapid positioning of a display pointer on a display screen may be accomplished by establishing a preferred order of display pointer movement between widgets when the particular screen location of the widgets is known. Having established the preferred order, the display pointer is automatically repositioned based on the preferred order when an input stimulus is activated. The input stimulus may be activated by a function of the keyboard, mouse, or any other input devices that may be used in association with a computer.

Abstract:
A data storage medium having the ability to recover from media errors includes a directory located at any desired region of a data storage area with redundant directory pointers at reserved locations. A unique file token is included in the directory entry for each data file and is also included in each extent list where the locations of parts of a fragmented data file are stored. Multiple extent lists are chained in two directions to facilitate reconstruction of the chain if part of the pointer information is lost.

A unique file token is included in the directory entry (40) for each data file and is also included in each extent list (44) where the locations of parts of a fragmented data file are stored. Multiple extent lists are chained in two directions to facilitate reconstruction of the chain if part of the pointer information is lost.

Abstract:
In a multitasking restricted access data processing system a common compact mechanism is provided for resolving access conflicts automatically irrespective of the category of restriction tread access, modify access or destroy access; the type of restriction (shared or exclusive) of the origin of the restriction (user specified or instruction implied). The mechanism operates by testing codewords (34) totally defining the access restriction in relation to a newly required access and currently in force access restrictions in relation to the inhabitants of a chained list (24) associated by a hashed object address form (18) access being denied, held pending until released or a time-out exception occurs or granted, the list appropriate to the transaction being updated accordingly and also updated as restrictions are released.
