    Abstract: Selectively altering air flow generates an access opening for a record surface on one of a large plurality of flexible record storage disks coaxially supported on a common spindle for rotation. Air flow through the interstices between the disks usually is sufficient to stabilize rotation of the disks. To generate a transducer access opening the air flow on one axial side of a record disk to be accessed, which includes a record surface, is altered in a manner that disks axially adjacent and facing the record surface tend to axially move together at their periphery, resulting in a peripheral transducer access opening adjacent a stabilized record disk. In a preferred form of the invention, the axial extent of the altered air flow is limited to a predetermined portion of the stack of disks for minimizing the volume of air flow change. For dual sided recording, the air flow is altered at either side of the record disk to be accessed.

    Abstract: Semi-rigid washers are coaxially disposed to form an air-permeable spindle for coaxially supporting flexible record disks. A plurality of such washers and disks is coaxially stacked to construct a flexible disk file. Washers preferably have an annular shoulder with a depth slightly different than the thickness of the record disks for firmly supporting and aligning same in the coaxial stack. Alternatively, disks may be adhesively secured to a radial outward portion of each washer. Additionally, each washer has a plurality of radially extending air passageways for facilitating radial air movement which controls the stack of flexible record disks. A radial inward portion of each washer abuts each adjacent washer for forming a firm axial stack of disks. A rigid stabilizing plate at each axial end completes the assembly.

    Abstract: A rotating head mandrel is contoured so that in cross-section the mandrel appears similar to the shape of an eyeball. Two mandrels are axially aligned for supporting a tape helically wrapped about the mandrels. Between the two mandrels is a rotor carrying a magnetic head. The magnetic tape helically wraps the two mandrels in the region of the rotor. The path of the rotating head relative to the tape is a transverse track at an acute angle to the longitudinal direction of the tape. The peak of the eyeball contour or cam shape contour of the mandrel is located at the entry and exit points of the tape as it helically wraps the mandrels. The peak gives the tape additional height relative to the rotating head and prevents the head from nicking the edge of the tape as it crosses the edges of the helically wrapped tape. The surfaces of the mandrels have holes through which air may be forced to provide a hydrostatic air bearing between the tape and the mandrels. The pattern of the holes on the mandrels is selected to support the tape in a uniform manner during helical wrap of the tape about the mandrels.

    Abstract: A stack of flexible record disks is peripherally accessed following a peripheral identification procedure. A magnetic sensing means disposed in close proximity to the outer circumference of the stack senses a magnetic record track on the respective disk for identifying axial position such that the record surface of a predetermined disk can be accessed. For example, one of a plurality of frequencies particularly identify a disk within a group of disks. A given storage apparatus may have a plurality of such groups.

    Abstract: A flexible disk file signal storage apparatus has a multiplicity of relatively thin, flexible disks of varying radii and arranged axially to facilitate radial disk selection. The radii pattern tends to minimize radii differences, thereby enhancing storage capacity. The flexible disks are arranged in axial groups of more than three disks with at least one disk in each group having a minimum radius with a pair of outer disks with a maximum radius plus at least one intermediate diameter disk. By interleaving alternate ones of said minimum radius disks between intermediate and maximum radius disks, radial selection access ports are maximized along an axial direction for a given radial difference between the maximum and minimum disk radii.
