Abstract: 1298308 Selective printing INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 26 May 1971 [31 Aug 1970] 17109/71 Addition to 1273614 Heading B6F A wire printer includes a print wire 22 biased toward paper 20 by a leaf spring 50, and held against the spring bias by a permanent magnet 42 connected in magnetic circuit with polepieces 38, 46 having an air gap 48 therebetween, the polepiece 38 being formed with an opening 38a receiving an armature 40 connected to the print wire 22. The affect of the permanent magnet 42 can be nullified by a winding 51 to permit the spring 50 to drive the wire for impression. The opening 38a as shown comprises a slot but may comprise a bore (70, Fig. 7, not shown). An auxiliary spring 54 is provided to prevent rebound.

Abstract: 1,120,184. Sheet-delivery apparatus. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 22 Nov., 1965 [21 Dec., 1964], No. 49455/65 Heading B6H. Apparatus primarily for depositing record documents or sheets of varying lengths neatly upon a gradually lowered stacker plate 88 comprises a continuously-driven timing belt 10 and document-carrying members 20 which can be released from the belt to receive a document from feed rollers 81, and can then be coupled to the belt to carry the document to the stack by means responsive to the approach of a document to the belt. Each member 20 comprises a base plate 21 with a pivot 31 on which is mounted a spring-closed document gripper 23, and a member 22 urged by a spring so that a tooth 35 thereon engages the internal teeth of the belt 10. Near the end of the belt 10 adjacent to the rollers 81 are plates 51, 52 pivoted on an axis 50 and carrying cams 57. Springs 55 on the axis 50 urge the plates to a position where the cams engage surfaces 29, 37 on the base plate 21 and toothed member 22 respectively to release two carrier members 20 from the belt 10. At the same time each gripper 23 is opened because of the engagement of a bent-over tab 43 thereon with the edge of the member 22. In operation, the leading edge of a document approaching the rollers 81 is sensed by a switch or photo-electric device 83 and this causes energization of a solenoid which, through a linkage, causes the lower plate 52 and its cam to be pivoted to inoperative position so that the tooth 35 engages the belt teeth and the gripper 23 engages the document, the leading edge of which is now within the gripper. When the document reaches the pile, a cam plate 44 engages an arm 41 on the gripper 23 to release the document. The carrier 20 continues to move with the belt 10 until it reaches the upper cam 57 which releases it. The rear edge of the document passing between the rollers 81 is sensed by a detector 84 which, through an electromagnet, causes the upper cam 57 to be moved to inoperative position, so that the upper carrier 20 is coupled to the belt and moved until it reaches the lower cam 57 which decouples it and opens the gripper 23 ready to receive the next document. A single carrier may be employed if the document frequency is low, or a number may be provided if the frequency is high. In the latter case, a corresponding number of cams 57 would be required. More than one stacking apparatus 88 may be provided with selectively-operable cams 44.

Abstract: 979,041. Delivering Sheets. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATIONFeb. 11, 1963 [Feb. 26, 1962], No. 6460/63. Heading B6H. Cheques 10 are fed past a device R, Fig. 1, for sensing magnetic ink data, and beneath a plate 16 having a series of recesses containing balls 19 which press the cheques down against a moving belt 15 which carries them to enter the nip.of rollers 22, 23, Figs. 1 and 2, and 24, 25. The cheques are thereby passed between the roller 25 and belts 38, so as to be inverted and turned at right-angles, then being passed by the belts 38 beneath a plate 43 having similar balls 19 to rollers 45, Fig. 3. A series of stacker pockets 39 are arranged in series, each having rollers 47, 48 to pass a cheque on to rollers 49, 50 of the next pocket. A pocket is selected to receive a cheque by the movement of a deflector member 61 by a magnet 60 in response to the device R, thus causing the cheque to pass beneath a guide 64 and a kicker spring 65 on to a platform 55, being pressed against a wall 46 by a wheel 53 rotated by a belt 54 and carried on an arm 52. The platform 55 drops under the weight of the stack by compression of a spring 56. Specification 976,140 is referred to.
